I had an idea for a project this weekend. I have roughly 200 feet of various sized kanthal sitting in my mailbox, and already have some plans for a few different builds, mostly clapton and some twisted. As I was looking through options, I saw this

and thought why not? I'm going to try it out this weekend and see if it works. I have anywhere from 24 to 34 gauge kanthal, so I'll have room to play around. I'll update this thread as the build is done or when I light everything on fire, whichever comes first.

I built this yesterday: it's a 28/32 Clapton twisted with a loosely done 30/34 Clapton helixed with 2 strands of 34g.
It'll be hard to do a single helix over a Clapton, it'll most likely end up twisting the two wires together. Try twisting 2x 28g fused Claptons with 34, & helixing them with 34g. Fused claptons when twisted remain more flat so the end product comes out more round than bumpy like the twisted Clapton I just made

Nice! I'm fairly certain that mine will look a little bit different; no twisted wire will be used, especially for the first try. I'm going to be tying half hitches with 34 gauge kanthal the length of a piece of 24 or 26 gauge. No drill, just lots of patience.

sorry for the second post, i cant seem to add anything to previous post, sometimes it happens :S

The above wire was made by twisting 2x 32g and then in the same direction i twisted the twisted wire onto a single strand of 30g, its the same way i made the wire below
Nice! This is close to what im looking for, but I'm pretty certain that I can get a tighter wrap using half hitches. Imagine a Clapton around a rod, then using just the outter.

the only thing with using just an outer is that the ohms are gonna be high! on like a clapton the current follows the core only so the ohms stay low.
I'm always ...... about with wire, if i come up with something i will let you know but i wanna see you do the half hitch with wire cus wire doesnt like to be made into knots

I can work with high ohms; this is mostly just a fun little experiment. Half hitches don't have a huge change in direction, so it should lend itself to wire a bit better than anything else. It might end up being a neat way to make tensioned coils lol.

just from looking at the picture.... i would say a clapton with a twisted wire staggered clapton over that

i just did a fused stapled twisted build this weekend
twisted 26ga nichrome 80 ribbon kanthal in the middle 36ga nichrome to wrap it all together
havent tested it yet, but im assuming it should fuction kind of like the fused stapled clapton i made

Kind of looks like a TMinterlock coil. To build a set of duals with some leg room, it's almost the same method as you made in that coil. You take 2x 36" strands of a higher gauge, like 30g (it's surprising how thick this wire gets) and twist them clockwise until it's tight. Then cut the twisted wire into 3 equal lengths, and twist them together counterclockwise tight. It gets more of a sharp triangular look to it and gives the appearance of the wires locking together, almost like a braid.
As for fused/ staggered/fused claptons, take your time with them. I've been liking a staggered 32/32/26g Clapton fused in the center of two pieces of 30g. It's a PITA to make but functions very well.

Because I'm working with an ancient drill with a key'd beat up chuck and power cord, I did 90% of the fusing wraps by hand. Flattened it out with toothless pliers while making the wire.

Got sloppy around the legs, but then again, didn't care because they're legs haha
