Lots of studies being done. General consensus is that ecigs are much safer compared to analogs, but more studies need to be done to determine what, if any, health risks are involved. That being said, I agree with pneathery, my own body tells me that they are not as bad for you.

I would reply that a 1/2 dozen substances, I believe all of which are already in cigarettes, are safer than 4000 substances including known carcinogens.

PG and VG - I think these are already used to humidify tobacco, and are used in inhalation therapies and concert fog etc
nicotine - already in cigarettes, nicotine patches, nicotine gum
flavorings - also used in cigarettes and foods - they are food flavorings

bottom line - they are a lot better than cigarettes. They are not meant for people who didn't smoke cigarettes.

IMO nothing in life is deemed as totally safe, even breathing depending on where you live. Everything has its risks, you just need to ask your self which is safer. I know I FEEL much better a month into e-cigs. I look better, I smell better, hell I even lost 5 lbs!!! All this and I've saved over 200 bucks so far!! To me its a no brainer!

I just keep my fingers crossed, living in nyc and I know (I just know) they are going to ban them here. Linda is a total B@i#ch when it comes to something she wants. I know this from personal experiences with her. But i am hopeful the health committee listens to reason and squashes the bill, or at least makes some changes to it.

Amen to all of the above! My lungs feel sooooooo much better. I went through all the withdrawal symptoms that smokers go through when I went off smokes and onto the PV. That alone tells me that I left the ugly stuff behind.

Walking up stairs is a no longer a chore. I sleep better and have more energy. My sense of smell and taste are returning. Life is returning in small slices since I've broken the chains of being tied to my smoking routine. Everything revolved around smoking.

There is no way this could be any worse than smoking. Even if this is deadly, which I highly doubt based on how I feel, I'm enjoying life so much more so the quality of my time left on earth has increased 100%.

FDA approval is not a guarantee of safety, or lack of side effects, listen to the disclaimers on prescription drugs advertised widely.

Personally, I don't hack up a lung in the AM, when I cough it now means I'm coming down with something, I climbed 5 flights of stairs (see if I could) and my legs were burning, my lungs weren't. I can taste and smell food again, my face is no longer a pasty color, and I will never smoke a cigarette again!

I hate to be cynical but I think FDA approval is what happens when a big pharma company donates enough to legislators that they can influence the FDA decision making process. If you use e-cigs for even a week- your body will tell you that they are 1000% better for you than analogs. I can't see what would make them dangerous. Food grade flavorings? PG/VG are found in cake mix and hundreds of foods, water vapor? Nicotine by itself isn't harmful unless you poison yourself with it. Can those things be dangerous in combination and inhaled? Maybe..but I remember that as a child I spent many hours next to a vaporizer breathing mentholated vapor and I ain't dead from that..

When I was smoking:
Couldn't go up a flight of stairs without getting winded. If I had to carry anything, like groceries, I'd get winded AND break a sweat.
Lost my singing voice. My voice became raspy and I couldn't take a deep enough breath to sustain a note.
I had chronic bouts with bronchitis and sinus infections. I was probably on my way to emphysema and COPD, too.

Since I started vaping:
The stairs are no longer a challenge, whether I'm carrying anything or not. I can RUN up the stairs for the first time in years!
I'm starting to get my singing voice back and I couldn't be more pleased.
I have not had one sinus infection or even a hint of bronchitis. I'm nursing a mild stuffy nose right now, but I haven't missed a day of work.

So, that being said, am I sure that vaping is completely safe? No, I'm not. But, at this point it's a whole lot safer and has definitely improved my health. No cigarette will EVER be able to do that.

I say we should build a gigantic shield around the Earth. We know that the sun causes cancer and puts many people in the hospital every year from burns and dehydration. I can't stand it anymore! BAN THE SUN! BAN THE SUN!

 Studies. The right amount of money can get you what ever results you want. Most of them are worthless.

I haven't had a cigarette for quite a few months, and I feel a lot better. That's all the study I need for myself. I'm 40 years old, when do I get to stop being treated like a child?

Well said FreakyStylie, well said!
When will the government stop lying about what is best for me?
I am an adult and if I make another mistake like smoking analogs, well that is my own damn fault
but please allow me to make those decisions!
Like everyone else I haven't felt this healthy in decades and I completely stopped using the four inhalers I needed every single day for my COPD.
That is amazing!

I would say that of the 599 ingredients present in cigarettes, e-cigarettes employ 3 of those ingredient. In other words, we are not inhaling anything different from what we are already inhaling in cigarettes -- we are just inhaling far fewer of those same ingredients, and none of the carcinogenic ones.

That being said, it would not make any sense for a non-smoker to begin using an e-cigarette but it would make perfect sense for a smoker to do it. It would be physically impossible for e-cigarettes to be MORE harmful than tobacco cigarettes so in that way they are unquestionably reduced harm.

Also, for what it's worth: cigarettes ARE regulated by the FDA so for me, having the FDA regulate a product does not indicate that the product is safe.
