The line I found most interesting was:

In certain cases, FDA officials say withdrawing a drug would mean eliminating the only available treatment for a condition.

Although not e-cig related in this case I still have to ask....if it's not working what is the point in having it as even the only treatment available? If it's not working then the only purpose of it is to put more money into Pharma's pocket.

Does this mean that E-Cigs could qualify for a Fast-Track Approval?

In short, NO. There are already numerous smoking cessation products on the market which the FDA has confidence will help wean you off tobacco. That translated means that the drug companies have been given the right to make money off numerous, poorly received NRT products.

E-Cigs are not an NRT product, they are a smoking alternative. For some they work as an NRT. However for others, myself included, they are only a means to eliminate a two + pack a day tobacco habit. For some it is total elimination, for others it is a drastic reduction. Again I am in the second group since I still manage to grab one of those cancer sticks from time to time rather than my PV.

If the FDA gets their way, it would take years of study and eliminate any semblance of PVing as we know it today.

Yep for me its a Smoking Alternative and it's the only Smoking Alternative that the FDA is even interested in as everything else is a 'tobacco product'.

In 1992, the FDA began speeding up the approval of novel drugs based on so-called surrogate endpoints, or laboratory measures that suggest the drug will make real improvements in patient health.

If this isn't a novel drug i don't know what is. And as for immediately improvement in health, we all know this is true. The FDA already know that that patch and gum have bad quit rates.....along with a few carcinogens thrown in for good measure.Who has actually said that the nicotine rates have to be the same as gum and patches, there's 21mg patches aren't there?

I agree. I am waiting for my first kit to come in, so I used a patch yesterday at work (or at least tried to). The light headedness and nausea were bad enough, but when added to the burning sensation on my arm, and the deep muscle ache afterward, it was too much, and I had to take it off.

I am so looking forward to my PV coming in so I can actually have a useful smoking alternative
