Been using genisis here for a long time... I know it is not for everyone, but my builds last me months and I do not fiddle with them unless I have to. I use a modified Petar K method. Build my coil around an appropriate sized drill bit, then roll my wick to the size that it will slide into the coil. My wicks are 400/500 mesh, torched, then rolled solid, no quenching or burning eliquid or with a lighter etc. It allows for me to slide the wick out and burn/clean the coil. The wick is never tight in the wick hole, sort of loose actually. When I first started, it was a long time learning what worked, and didn't for ME. So there is a learning curve for what works for you. Once you get it, you just get it, and it works wonderfully, especially after a break-in. You also learn what doesn't work for you in that process.
Also, what is nice about genisis mesh/coil setups. You get to see exactly how your eliquid is vaporizing. If it is gunking up terribly in a short period of time, I wouldn't vape it. That build up tells you how cleanly (or not) your e-liquid vapes. On my setups, Boba's Bounty leaves a bit of stuff behind (and I usually do a weekly wick pull and burn the coil), Backwoods Brew is terrible and leaves a lot of gunk (so I do not vape it anymore), HHV burns realtively clean, as does PLUID and other AVE liquids... I have had setups last 3 months with daily use little to no effort in cleaning. All depending on the e-liquid.
As far as your current issue. As already suggested and linked... Do the cotton method just under the coil as a stop gap so you can enjoy. Requires very little cotton, and works a treat. I have used it a few times when I have gotten frustrated with one I was setting up and just couldn't get it right. Then later when you get the gumption, try it again in the traditional mesh/coil setup. Eventually you will get it, and reap the rewards.
