Hello fellow DIYers!

I have a few questions and hope someone can give me some help. First off, I've already purchased nic, flavors, pg and vg. However, I'm trying to figure out the most accurate way to make a new recipe. Basically, I'd be starting out with a 3 or 6 mL bottle, and I have 1mL, 5mL and 10mL syringes, and a total of two needles, not sure on the size. I'm wondering if my measurements are gonna be accurate enough, though, considering a fair amount of liquids remains in the syringe and/or needles. Also, what would be a good place to buy 3, 10, 15 and 30mL bottles and additional syringes. I also have some pipettes but hate using them.

If someone could point me in the right direction on how to go about my measurements, that would be great!

RE: your 1st question: The secret to DIY is repeatability! Whatever you do consistently repeat doing it - keep notes on each and every recipe and/or use an e-juice calculator like E-Juice-Me-Up... As far as the amount left in the needle - rinse out you syringe between each flavor... Not that the miniscule amount retained in the needle would affect the juice - just good lab procedure... :)

RE: your 2nd question: Yes, you'll need larger needles for VG... Get a small range of them - they're cheap... :)

If you suck a little air into the syringe before drawing up the liquid (instead of starting with the plunger all the way down), the air in the syringe will help push everything out.

Also, you can never have enough bottles - well, I bought 24, and I'm only using half of them at the moment, so ymmv. Search Amazon, or your favorite supplier for '2 Dram glass vial' - often cheaper than plastic bottles, I don't get nervous rinsing and reusing, and the hold about 6 ml, perfect for a test batch.

Mix on, and take good notes.

I figured it was a minescule amount, just that with 3mL sizes maybe making a bigger impact. I've seen 14, 16, and 18 gauge needles at Wizard labs, should I just get a few of each?

Throw those syringes away and get a scale. Seriously.

I've seen a lot of people saying this is the way to go, and I will do that once I am making larger batches. For now, I'll stick to volume measurements. I can only imagine it would be a pain weighing everything out for a 10mL bottle. Of course, a 120mL batch would be a pain filling even with a 20mL syringe, so thats probably the point I'd do it by weight, lol.

Make sure to use several coats of clear nail polish on your syringes so as to keep the markings from wearing off. It really works well. A good hot water rinse keeps them clean and if that doesn't satisfy you an alcohol flush will do to sterilize them.

Ah nice idea, thanks. I make sure to keep my syringes and needles cleaned AND sterilized with alcohol :) I'm assuming start 70% rubbing alcohol should suffice my needs?

Another nice idea, I usually do this so the amount that's left in the syringe is probably 1/20mL if that. That satisfies me that the amount will make no difference on my batches. Thanks!

So I'm just going to go with Wizard Labs for all my syringes, needles and bottle needs. They have some glass bottles there, too, maybe I'll try some, but I really like the plastic bottles. Thanks for the help guys!

Oh one more question! I am mixing with 100mg/mL nic. If I'm understanding the concept correctly, this is 10% nic and 90% PG (the type I picked up is PG based not VG based), right? Also, I'm going to be mixing it indoors somewhere, probably my garage. It's like 10 degrees out of late so I don't really wanna crack the window if I don't have to, would a small fan to keep the area ventilated suffice enough to keep me from any chance of inhaling too much of the nicotine when I crack it? I also have a son, almost 2 years old, he doesn't play in the garage but his room is in close proximity to the garage (the doors within 20 feet). As long as his doors closed, he should be contained from the Nic?

For mixing purposes, your juice calculator (I use e juice me up) will ask what your Nic is based in and count that towards that ingredient (PG or VG). EX: If you use 1ml of Nic based in PG it will count that as 1ml of PG. I do the same thing if I'm doing it my head. You should be fine in your garage. I feel like as long as I'm not hovering over the Nic bottle taking deep breaths everything if fine. A tip that might help is if your making multiple recipes, leave the Nic till last and then open it up and add it to each bottle in the correct proportion, that way you only have to get the gloves, eye protection on once (I wear gloves and eye protection when dispensing 100mg NIC). I also close each ingredient as soon as I'm done with it (Saves on spills and VG in particular absorbing water from the air). Good luck!!! Just my :2c:

PS 14g syringe needle for the VG or no needle at all- it's up to you.

I just gave up on using a needle with the syringe for VG, now just use the syringe no needle. I must be really impatient:). Have to make sure the syringe will fit thru the neck of the bottle. Felt like I was growing old (older:)) waiting on the syringe to suck up the VG with a needle.

Myself I prefer to use 14 gauge for the base liquids (PG,VG and Nic) and 18 gauge for the flavorings. As for my syringes, I protect the markings with a piece of clear packing tape.

Does rubbing alcohol cause damage? Cause everclear is illegal here.

BOOZE ALCOHOL: This is ethanol for drinking: vodka, Everclear or moonshine. Flavored or colored boozes will lend "interesting" flavors to whatever device we're cleaning. All, except the moonshine, involve paying heavy federal and state taxes.
ISOPROPYL ALCOHOL: Chemically, this is a different kind of alcohol that is poisonous to drink straight out of the bottle. But, if it's labelled "USP," it's safe for cleaning anything we'd insert in our mouths (drip-tips, attys, cartos, the relevant parts of Vivi Novas, Stardusts, RBAs, etc.) provided you let whatever you cleaned with it dry thoroughly!! The 91% concentration will kill anything that lives on God's green earth. It's also dirt cheap compared with booze alcohols (again, excepting moonshine).
RUBBING or DENATURED ALCOHOL: Chemically, rubbing alcohol is ethanol (i.e., booze alcohol) that's been denatured (which is a fancy word for "poisoned") so you can't drink it and thereby cheat the taxmen. Sometimes, it's only denatured with methanol, but many states require the addition of non-volatile poisons. Methanol will evaporate, but any other poisons added won't. Word to the wise: don't use rubbing alcohol!

Here's a thread that talks about the different things you can use: http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/e-cigarette-maintenance/364466-vodka-rubbing-alcohol.html
