I started vaping about a week ago and about two days ago I had a bad experience, I use a tank system. At first it was great but then it took on a very harsh smoke taste, really cutting up my throat. I had to switch to the second atty and after about a day of use it was usable, at first I couldn't even take a pull on it.
So I decided to order another atty, but to go for the normal style carts and after a quick chat got another tank atty thrown in free. When I spoke to the guy he said it was possible to direct drip on to the tank atty? I tried but started to get that smoke flavour back so stopped, I also somehow managed to melt a tank cart maybe because of dripping, the soft rubber cap. It could have been because I changed juice and it higher viscosity, seems like the atty gets hotter now.
All in all things are good, I've only had 1 smoke and that was on the first day, not bad after my habit. I just want to know a few things.
-Is there any cleaning I need to preform on the atty? I nothing to mine, could that have caused the burning taste?
-Rotating attys?
-Direct dripping? How many drops and pulls? Not planning to DD on tank, just the normal wick atty.
-How can I prevent getting that burning taste?
That's all I can think of right now =/

Dripping on a regular 510 atty goes like this:

Start with 4 drops and wait a few seconds so the wick can get good and wet. Vape until the vapor production drops off and the flavor starts to go "flat".
Add 2-3 more drops and wait a few seconds. Vape until the same result as step one.
Repeat until you want to change flavors.

When I want to change flavors, I just vape until the flavor I'm currently using goes flat, then I add 3 drops from the new flavor.

This thread offers some great advice for avoiding the nasty burnt taste from 510 atties:

Good luck and happy vaping!

Womanofheart covered the dripping to the letter.

For cleaning there's several methods and it's down to preference how you do it. For me, I used to just boil a kettle and blow the atty out over the sink while I waited then fill a cup with the boiled water and chuck the atty in. Give it time to cool so I can get it out, rinse it out with hot water and back to vaping. If I was feeling really lazy I'd just rinse it under the hot tap for a bit and keep blowing it out.

Some people use alcohol and sit it in something like vodka or stronger and some go as far to use an ultrasonic cleaner. I did ok with just water.

Rotating atties. If you have more than one try to not to drag on one atty too long at any one time. When you feel it's getting hot and want to vape more, get another atty and use that one. Pretty much how rotating goes. Other than that it means not using the same one for an extended period, as in clean one, use the other; in rotation. It should help prolong their lifespan.

If they're new then cleaning them wouldn't do so much to get rid of the burning taste. When I used the 510s and dripped I found that not debridging them helped them retain the juice better and was more consistent for it. On the very first refill (after cleaning/blowing it out) use 4 drops and let it sit for 5 minutes. You'll find most if not all the juice is "gone" inside the atty somewhere. Don't blow it out. Now add 2 drops and it should sit in the atty. You can get a few draws off those two drops. I got around 8 - 12. Then drip just 1 - 2 drops per time you need to.

I hated dripping with my 510 atties for the same reason. It really hurt my throat when it got dry or I got impatient and vaped before it absorbed some juice. I started using cartomisers instead of atties and tank systems. I heard a lot of people say they're good and didn't think it would be all that but they really are. Same kinda deal as tanks; fill them, vape them, refill them. They're just disposable, maybe 2 weeks max on one, maybe more but they're cheap to get in. Less maintenance than atties and tanks and more consistent but less permanent, in my opinion anyway. Just an option for you!

You get the burned taste when your juice is too thick to wick and burns onto the wick. To remove the taste you have to clean the wick. You want to use 70 pg / 30 vg liquids or thin thicker liquids with distilled water, pga or vodka. I use all vg that is thinned with no problems is my ego-t.

1. Pop the piercing plate out. I use a small flathead screwdriver for this.
2. Carefully remove the wick from the plate. You want to try to keep the little metal "hat" attached to the wick, it holds everything in place.
3. Rinse the wick in hot water or burn the juice off with a lighter. It will turn white when clean.
4. Place it back in the piercing plate. Align the top of the wick with the lowest side of the piercing needle.
5. Press the piercing plate back in. I use a multi-head screwdriver with no bit for this. Press until you feel is pop back into place
6. Prime wick by dropping 4-5 drops in the battery end of the atty. I always do this with new or cleaned atty's.
7.Rreplace tank and vape.

If you have any problems P.M. me and I'll try to trouble-shoot with you! :)

Great suggestions. Also - when dripping, if you are using thick juice then it can flow very sluggishly can not be keeping the atomizer wet. If this is the case, try thinning the juice with a bit of distilled water or edible pure grain alcohol. That solved one person's burnt taste problems when dripping.

Also - some juices (especially dark juices or any non-clear juices) can leave dried flavoring sediment in an atomizer and make it need cleaning much more quickly. I have one juice I adored but it was a sediment pig - left tons of sediment aka slag as one person called it and clogged up my attys and cartomizers so quickly that I had to find a different juice.

I do not own any tank attys. Lie. Actually I own one 510-T atty and never felt the need to try it because I am happy with cartomizers (Boge). When I need to clean a regular atomizer I will first blow it out well. Then I soak it in a bowl of near-boiling water, using a tongs to hold the atty and scoop water through it and also to tilt it to get all air bubbles out when I leave it submerged to soak. Then I scoop water through it again. Then I shake it out and blow it out. Next I drop it in a jar or edible pure grain alcohol (if you can't get that, you can use rubbing alcohol but that stuff is poison so make sure it is really totally dry before using the atty). I use the tongs to tilt the atty in the alcohol to get all air bubbles out and leave it overnight. Next Day I use the tongs to scoop the alcohol through the atty. Then I shake the atty out very well and set it to dry until the next time I need a clean atty (at which time I will prime it very well with juice and wait before using it).

AHH - There you go in comment above - tank-atty specific cleaning (we were typing at the same time)
