I know how to refill standard cartos with a syringe, avoiding the coil but have never seen inside a horizontal coil carto. Are they harder/different to fill horizontal ?

Ms. Katz you fill them the same way with a syringe as you do a standard. It's just as easy. 
I've used 3 vendor's horizonal coil cartos (Bloog, Nhaler and Ikenvape). Doesn't matter if you use condom, syringe or drip&spin. The real difference is that the coil pretty much obscures the center hole(you can see a little daylight at the bottom, but not like the vertical wire cartos). Two things I've noticed after filling: there will be a little liquid leakage, when you remove the condom and .... plug, so gently give a couple blows, to clear the center tube. Use a manual batt, if you have one, in case more leaks out. With the vertical wire cartos, I just take a small piece of rolled up paper towel and insert into batt end, to soak up any excess but its not really possible with horizontal coil cartos. Good luck
