Finally found a way to protect the Chuck's switch

from accidentally depressing.

This works great as 'quick fix', if you work doing construction work or other hard labor job, and just want to throw your Chuck in your work pouch or pocket without having the switch getting pressed.

My husband used a 1/2" .rubber grommet(rubber type thick washer) which is about 3/16" thick and placed it around the nut, so the switch is surrounded by it, and then wrapped electrical tape around it and the Chuck to secure it.

Works great!

It won't turn on unless you press in the center, where the switch is. Still simple to press, which is nice, but has to pressed in the right spot to work, since the switch has to be completely depressed to activate, the rubber protects it from accidentally getting depressed and risk burning up atty's/carts, lol.

Works perfectly, he did several tests to try to get the switch to depress, and nothing activated it, since you have press the switch hidden in the center of the washer/grommet.

His Chuck has black on the top, and you can barely tell it's on there. Which he said he wouldn't care how it looked, long as it wasn't getting activated while he's working and accidentally burning up atty's.

Electrical tape does come in quite a few different colors, (get the stretchy kind so you can wrap it good and tight)

Here is a picture of a similar grommet Rubber Grommet Kit, Desk Cable Grommets, Rubber Bushings smallest one in the picture) Rubber Grommet Kit, Desk Cable Grommets, Rubber Bushings .The one he used is a little smaller hole in the center, but I know the hard ware store has all kinds of sizes, lol.

anything that is thick with a hole in the center, that is strong and hard to depress would work. Even if you didn't have one that thick, you could put 2 or 3 together and make it work.

the one he's using, is more rounded, it shaped just exactly like a dough-nut, just found it in a drawer, and it fit, lol.

Whatever the type/shape a person might want to try or use, as long as it prevents things from pressing the switch down, is all that counts. =)

just wanted to share that little tip,

UPDATE: It's been a week and still no issues. .He said he doesn't worry about it all now, .

I was trying to think of something like that...not sure I wanna tape my chuck though. Was thing of larger rubber spacers that could go around the Chuck, one on each side of the button...

I'm not nearly clever enough or motivated to implement it though.

you're too fast weemeraner...

Thanks ladycats.

And just so I don't totally derail MickiO's thread...

The other thing I have tinkered with is to use the rubber boot that comes off a new 510 cart. It's about the right size to cover the switch. I just haven't come up with a non-permanent way to attach it. I really don't want to glue anything to my chuck and risk mucking up the beautiful finish. Maybe some sort of rubber band strap that will go around the whole thing, without being to bulky and clunky looking.

This is a good idea.
Got a Pic MickiO??

no, but I can get one, might be awhile before I can, but I'll post it when I get one. Have to get hubby to develop film, he works long hours, but I'll work on it, don't have a digital camera, sorry.

you know my husband's is working perfectly! the switch problem is solved and no longer an issue by using a rubber grommet this way.

We were talking about this, since it really is working so good, that Jeff could use a metal grommet shaped to conform to the Chuck and spot tac it to the body, and that way he could powder coat it with the rest of the body, but would probably need a tool to screw the switch on, is all.

The thing that really makes the rubber kind so nice, rubber has a little spring or give to it. But metal would work if it were shaped right, and even shiney chrome would actually look pretty sweet, not sure Jeff wants to mess with that, but maybe on special orders for extra $ or maybe someone else can do it if he doesn't want to mess with it. I dunno.

Anther plus my husband's noticed, since he's in construction work, he said he can actually lay it down without it rolling off the roof, They had to do a rook the other day, and he was able to test it, and said it have to be a fairly steep slope before it will roll,

We also discovered that the switch actually has to be nearly fully depressed before the atty receives any power, so as long as the material used is strong and is as high or close to the height of the switch, it will work.

Thanks lilibet. He is a great dog ...best dog ever :)

...Have to get hubby to develop film...

Wow, haven't heard that for a while.8-o
Do they even still sell film?:?:

Just messin' with ya' MickiO:p But you do know you can get a cheap digital for like 30 bucks these days, right? Probably costs more to buy and develop 3-4 rolls of film.

Here is what I am trying. I took the little silicone washer out of a carto. It works perfectly but won't stay on. I got some Duro All Purpose Spray Adhesive at Lowes. The option is for repositionable bond by spraying only one side. I sprayed some on a qtip and put it on the back of the washer and then pressed it onto the Chuck. Makes it very easy to push the button but not sure how long it will stay on. I will report back.

I can't believe I just now got an e-mail notification for the above post, and I looked at the day, and it shows you posted this message to me 3 DAYS ago!!! .8-o .Not sure what's going on there, I checked some of my other thread, and discovered I had more answers that I never have received an e-mail notification for either, odd, hmmmm..

ANYways, better late than never eh? lol.

LOL! Yeah, they still sell film, ha. We've been talkin about makin the big plunge and getting a digital camera one day, lol. But you know what John, our 35mm Cannon uses the same exact 3v batteries as the Chuck, lol. (Nice!). PLUS, he uses big lenses for close ups, you know, up here in the Rocky Mountains, always nice to have great lenses for getting that perfect shot of wildlife, =).....is it possible to do this with digitals nowdays?, or no, I dunno,

Hubby works in construction and work is tight through the winter, but maybe later on we can get one and take a step up, ha. .I see my printer has some kindof slot on it to use for digital camera, so that's a plus, ha.

That's interesting, which e-cig icarto did you use? .Do you mean like a 401? .You've got me curious, I'd like to see what that carto looks like, Where could I find a pix of one?

Thanks

No not a cart but a cartomizer. When you remove the white end there is a little round silicone washer to keep the juice from coming into your mouth. I take both the white top and this washer out and just use an 801 soft whistle tip on the cartomizer so I have tons of these.

Sorry, I guess I still don't understand which one you have, .Where do you get your cartomisers? I use 801 carts, and the white piece is one solid piece of plastic, there's no washer in it..

Got an idea: I found grommet roundel 8x14mm (5/16" x 9/16") which are jewelry beads in the same shape needed, everything from mahogany, onyx, obsidian, synthetic turquoise, pink quartz, tiger eye, etc, May need to use a dremmel tool, so it fits nice, or might not need to, I dunno. I'm thinking about ordering one to play around with it and see how it works.

And another type that has a larger that is 5mm hole (3/16") and these are tube shaped beads, for making jewelry) silver, silver with crystals, metal with patterns, crystals, etc,) Could easily

Could just apply these with 3M automotive adhesive spray, and attach it like Giz's Mom used with the silicone washer, just a thought :)
Would be easy to shape these so they sit nice on a CHuck.

Here's a link tube shaped silver beads:Large Hole Beads : Artbeads.com - Sterling Silver - Presidents Day Sale

And this is the page for the ones made out of different stones or wood, Caprice Beads - Artbeads.com - Gemstone - Presidents Day Sale

Also wondering if maybe they make different colored thick silicone/neoprene washers. (Don't have pix yet, but FWIW, the rubber washer my husband used, is rounded and shaped just like apple jacks or cheerio's cereal, fits around the nut and sits flush with height as the switch)

(Just rolling some ideas around of other things that could be used to protect the switch that a person could use, that would look nice and also accent Jeff's gorgeous artwork :))
