Hey everyone so I bought some 28gauge Kanthal wire to start building coils. I have been watching a lot of videos and what not on youtube, but I have a question I can't seem to answer. Once I pick out what ohm I want my coil, how do I know how many wraps I need to do? If I want to build a .4ohm coil, does that need more wraps, vs a 1 ohm coil? Also, how do I know what size drill bit to use to make the wraps? I can not seem to find just a basic information about this.

A short piece of wire in any gauge has less resistance than a longer length of wire. More coils = more resistance. The diameter of the rod you wind on affects the resistance, too. The larger the wrap diameter, the more resistance for the same number of turns.

Here's an online coil wrap calculator.

You guys really jumped in quick! It's uncanny that we all recommended the same coil wrap calculator...

The above is all good advice. Make sure you understand that a goof up on the coil can be dangerous if you happen to create a short when you install it and try to fire a mech mod unless it's fuse protected. With an electronic mod you have protection. A DNA 30 sub ohm mod will do the job and protect you while you are sub ohm vaping. It's expensive, but far cheaper than an ER visit!

I've found the Steam-engine site is a good resource, but like Xj-Linux said... it's an art form. Depending on what atty you're building on, leg length, etc... Practice makes perfect. And once you find what you like, being able to repeat it is the key to success!

There's also a nice android app called Vapors Toolbox for your phone.

There are 2 schools on this... 1 is boil... 2 is don't boil. I'm using them right outta the bag without boiling. I boiled them at first, then I tried without boiling. Never really noticed a different in taste IMO... It's up to you. There are a ton of people who boil, and a ton of people to don't boil.

I know people will say that boiling will get rid of any contaminants. But honestly IMO even without boiling... they're MUCH better/safer than smoking analogs!

Your choice... either way you should be fine IMO...

I stopped boiling cotton. When you think of all of the crap in tap water, I don't want to add those minerals, chlorine and, fluoride to my vapor.
Distilled water or reverse osmosis water would solve that, but I'm lazy.

LOL, too funny! I was gonna say that earlier about being too lazy to boil my cotton! But... there it it is! I'm just too damn lazy to boil my cotton!
