Hello all. I just made my first two coils ever last night and may be more confused than when I started. I couldn't tell you the name of the rba I built on, maybe someone else has the name for it. I also couldn't tell you the guage of the kanthal as it came with the rba and I'm completely new to this. I have to guess it's way smaller than what I usually hear talked about here though (28-32 guage), cause I couldn't build one above an ohm. The ss mesh came with the kit too, no vape shops nearby who sell rebuildable kit, so I have nothing really to compare any of it to.

I built the first one with roughly 4/5 wrap, torched it, put it on the meter and it came out like this.

I built the 2nd one with about 10 wraps around the mesh and came out like this.

I've got the gear to sub-ohm, I'm just terrified of it until I've ran a few of my own coils on a protected mod for a while and make sure I know what I'm doing. My questions...

Is this tiny guage kanthal supposed to be used on the other style of coil where all wraps stay up against each other (like a spring without tension)? Thats the only theory I've come up with as to being able to use this kanthal for higher than an ohm coil. If not, what am I doing wrong to cause so low ohms? If so, is there anything I need to know about building a coil with all wraps touching?

I am pleased I got a couple coils built and seemingly stable. They don't seem to have any shorts when I put the cap on. I just really want over an ohm for my first couple. I'm thinking of heading to Columbus tomorrow to find a vape shop that deals in rebuildables and get someone to help me (also to buy some different kanthal and of course easier to use wicking material). I also have an Omega style RDA, any tips on what I should pick up to build both of these (and the kayfun in the mail)?

to ecf oldsmashbones. I'm sure there are others that will be able to help you because I just do regular simple builds. (quite happy though) I know safety is a concern so I would hope that you do your research. Everything you need to know is somewhere around here. Lots of people sub-ohm. Here are some links that might help you.

That's what I want though, regular simple builds I can run on a regulated mod for my first few. I've poured over the sub-ohm safety, ohms law, etc and I'm just not comfortable with sub-ohming yet. I guess it's possible I can't build one with the current kit I have at hand, but would like to know what kit is good to build 1.3-1.7 ohm builds. From what I've read it seems 32 or 30 gauge kanthal... I guess I'll have to buy cotton, ekowool, and silica to see what wick material I'll like working with. I didn't find the ss mesh hard to work with though.

For any sub-ohmers, do those coils look anything like you'd expect... think they'll work? I have my mechs, and vtc4's, but I'm really reluctant to try my first coils out that way without even owning a vape-safe fuse (guess I'll pick one of those up if I find a vape shop too).

I guess I should also mention I don't really have access to youtube. Blocked at work and home I've got dial up (yes I live in the woods). I mean, dial up is capable of loading a video, but I'm really not willing to wait an hr for a 3 min video. I would probably do so if I was assured it was worthwhile, except the net here crashes constantly, so usually it's more like 40 min of waiting, then a disconnect failure and starting over 3 or 4 times (several hours wait) for one short video.
