Hello! First a tidbit about me, forgive my novel as I (for lack of good writing skills) cannot accurately articulate this into a short sweet intro.

I have been lurking for sometime-:) had decided to "cut back" on cigs- so found a disposable blu cig at a gas station- I was very unhappy with the throat hit(I believe that is the term).
I will compare it to, craving a juicy steak and getting a tofu burger.
Then I discovered a tko vapor at the mall, he set me up with an mvp. Wow! Cough cough! Needless to say, I loved it! My thirteen year old daughter was laughing at mom and her "crack pipe" (we live in South Dakota so you don't see many people walking around with a giant ecig)
Luck would have it, I ended up with a bronchial infection two days later. Of course being the google genius that I am, I self diagnosed myself with smokers flu, I was trying to smoke analogs to get rid of it! Oh the things we laugh at later-
(Oddly I believe that bronchial infection helped me make the switch)
'Twas an Easter miracle, I have not had analog since.
Now onto my question--

My wonderful mother, has smoked since 1963 (at least). So I set her up. Back in April. However, she can't inhale she coughs like a first time smoker. Every time-

Looking into things, I ordered her 100%vg -- after she tried other blends. She still can't seem to inhale. Or quite give up the smokes.
She does want to quit, but she has been a secret closet smoker for the last 12 years or so- (yes it's possible, I don't know how, but it is). My wonderful father is the nicest man alive, and wouldn't crack down all Chris brown) but she's hid this habit. And I told her vaping would provide her with so much more freedom. ( I believe she still lives off the advice of the 1955's tips for the perfect wife, good housekeeping article)

I would love some tips from you all, how you took the steps to quit and switch to vaping.
Mind set, I believe is number one.
(Yes I know all I needed to really say, is the last line)

Welcome to ECF!

It wasn't as much mindset for me but I am part of the small minority who started vaping and quit analogs accidentally.

But it is different for everybody. And as much as we'd like to believe that vaping is the holy grail of cessation methods, it isn't for some people.

I'm sure the folks here can provide you with tons of advice. I am probably not the best person to give advice as I had no intention of quitting my 2 pack a day habit. It just happened the first time I vaped.

I still have issues with this at times. I was a smoker for 43 years.

Try turning down the vv/vw to the lowest setting that produces vapor then increase as she can tolerate. VG was a great idea and is all I can use. Mouth inhale. A longer drip tip may help. I've even cut a straw in half and shoved it over the drip tip in a pinch. You can also try using unflavored liquid.

Welcome to the forum and good luck to your mom.

I just kept improving and upgrading my gear and builds till I got to the point that no smoke, cigar or pipe could possibly compare to the quality, flavor and total satisfaction that my vape provides me today.

Finding a decent setup and atomizer is crucial. Finding the right juice blend is probably the most frustrating aspect of vape. Was all over the board till I found 70% VG to be my preferred ratio.

Once I received my first regulated mod and re-buildable atomizer, rba, I knew I would never go back to cigarettes. Since then I've gone mechs, DIY juice and high amp regulated.

Thinking something like an Aspire Nautilus and an Innokin VV V3 would have the best chances of providing and adequate smooth vape that would satisfy the need not to smoke. Also juices that are fruit or minty seem to be smoother and less harsh. Thing is, one has to keep experimenting till their path is found.

good luck,

Vape long and Prosper.!!!

For me at first I was using vaping to dramatically drop down the amount of cigs I took in daily. But, after I got some really good equipment and found flavors that WOW'd me, it was almost like I just forgot to smoke real cigs. It's the strangest thing honestly. Then one day I had a bad day and reached for a real one, lit it and it tasted like total crap. I wasn't consciously thinking about it all the time which helped. At work, it was actually easier to vape in my office rather than go all the way outside to smoke. So, convenience made it easier to start but after doing it I guess vaping became the "habit" for me and smoking just sorta fell to the wayside. It's very hard to explain or even understand for me honestly. I smoked for 15 years. I tried quitting a million times with Chantix, the gum, hypnosis, the patch etc....this was a first and for something that really had a strong hold on me, it happened so effortlessly.

What really made me transition over though was getting better "equipment." In the beginning, using the "cheapo" stuff, I didn't get the vape that felt like smoking so I would find myself vaping then still reaching for a real one. As I started researching and buying and trying new stuff, I found stuff that felt better and tasted better and it just happened.

Switching her to 100% VG was a very good idea as sometimes the PG can be too harsh for some to handle. You may have the nic level too high for her try lowering it to something between 12 and 6 so that way she's still getting the nic fix but not too much. You could also try a Blend 5 flavor or RY4, more of a tobacco flavor but seems to be much smoother for people. In regards to how I quit, I'm a single mom and even though I have lots of family I want to be around to raise her and with smoking of course that's not a sure thing. Every time I lite up a cigg. she would tell me how bad it is and that it stinks so on and so forth.....so even though it took some time my inspiration for quitting was my little girl. :D You can do it, you just have to really want to....

For me, coughing on inhale is directly correlated with nicotine level. 18 is tolerable for me but anything above that makes me cough like crazy. It's a little counterintuitive since I smoked full flavored 100's for 40+ years without that reaction. I guess everybody is different.

Mindsets can be tricky. I've quit lots of bat habits over the years. Smoking is just the last holdout in a long list. For me, to stop thinking of it as an addiction is key. Calling something an addiction can be sort of a justification for a bad habit or behavior. Again, this is just how it seems to work for me. For example, at one time I drank a fifth of vodka every single day for many years and the thought that I was the victim of an alcoholic disease instead of an habitual drunk that simply liked being drunk was kind of gratifying in an odd way. Once I decided it was just an inexcusable bad habit, I was able to quit with no fear of ever "falling off the wagon". It took about 30 days or so to form the new habit of not drinking, but after that it wasn't anything like a daily struggle at all. I never went to a meeting or did any of the requisite 12 steps that I'm aware of (I don't really know what they are). Today, I can even have a few drinks or even get drunk once in a blue moon (every few years or so) and it's no problem whatsoever. I'm not an alcoholic and I refuse to accept that I am - much to the consternation of many outsiders looking in that still insist that I am.

I'm taking the same approach to smoking. It's just the last nasty habit from a long list, including alcohol, ......., methamphetamines and oxycontin, that needs to be broken and I have no real excuses for not breaking it. I have no doubts about my ability to prevail.

See? Mindsets are personal and thousands, if not millions, have been helped by taking a different rout. I don't want take anything away from those other demonstrably successful approaches. They too work for lots of people, but my point is that approaching these things as addictions is not the only successful way to approach them, from my personal experience.

That's my 2 cents...well... more like a buck-fifty.:2c:

to ecf Fitgirl. Wonderful place to be and I am glad you are here. The coughing goes away or at least it did for me. I had no idea I was going to quit smoking. I just wanted to try it and maybe save a bit of money here and there. I did both for a while and just kept cutting down on cigarettes. It literally got to the point where my brain decided that the vaping just tasted so much better than it didn't want a cigarette. It was just that easy. No withdrawal, no anxiety. Just the the pure love of finding a new addiction. Good luck to ya and I look forward to hearing more about your adventure. :)

It's normal to cough at first for nearly all that I have converted. But she has to be willing and you probably know best what to say to get her to try? Does she want to vape? Is she convinced of the health benefits. For me, High Nic level and turned down low was the way to start, but that first week is up to the user and will adjust. You just have to get her over that FIRST hump...is she willing?

Let her try the blu.

As others have said she is probably trying to lung inhale;
she needs to mouth inhale like a cigar.

I don't think 100vg is a good idea for somebody just starting; you get other problems or compound the problem.
I recommend 50/50 and drop nicotine level to 6 for starting out; with a second tank if possible containing 24mg nic.

Thankyou everyone! (Nick I like the way you think)

I too wasn't going to "quit". One day I was very mad about an incident, went to smoke to spite myself - I thought this is too much of a commitment! Lol. It tasted horrible. Hated being engulfed in the second hand smoke- that was it for me.

My mom has smoked a harsh menthol cig for years. She prefers tobacco with menthol-
I'll look into the better mods! I appreciate all of your replies!
