A few days ago I received the Dream, aka BT801, rebuildable dripping atomizer ordered from EmpireMods. It's a Fatty clone, made of stainless steal. It features 2 negative screws for optional dual coil, fits 510 drip tips, has a spring loaded sealed connection, and has adjustable airflow control. It's my first rba after years of dripping with disposable atties.
When I received it I was impressed by the quality. Solid constuction, a nice piece for the low price. The airflow control was way too loose, but was easy to tighten up by placing some tape over the threads. It came already built and tested at 2.1 ohms. The silica wick was pretty short; coils evenly spaced out and heated evenly.
The first vape was horrendous. All throat hit, little vapor. I unscrewed the top part and saw the coil was on the opposite side of the 3 air holes. It was easy to flip the coil over the center screw so it was next to the holes and after that it was much better. The flavor reminded me of the couple clearos I've tried; clean and well represented but with an added funny taste. I think it's from the silica wick. I cleaned it well and dry burned, and that helped a little. After a couple hours the odd taste mostly faded.
The vapor production is about medium. Loosening the airflow control so it's more airy produces more vapor, but tightening produces more flavor and throat hit. I keep it closer to the tight direction so it's about as airy as a typical 510. The vapor production is satisfactory for me, but not nearly as high as a HH.357 or some other premium disposable atties.
The throat hit is very good. Set to more airy it compares to a 901 and tighter it's strong like a 510, maybe even a little stronger. It's really nice to be able to contol that.
The taste is, well, gonna need more time with it. For the most part, it's consistant as far as representing all nuances. Need to try more flavors to make sure but it seems like it's not muting any flavor category yet. Not quite the punch of a well working premium but close enough. I would like to experiment with other wicking material.
The ease of use is just awesome. No worries about leaking. I am getting leaking through the side air holes, but that's purely user error in adding too many drops for the small wick to grab onto. I will make longer wicks when I put a new one in. The wick around the coil gets gunked up after a few hours with a NET, but is so easy to take apart, run under water, blot dry and dry burn. Nice not to have to apply my normal atty maintainance and not having to worry about dirty juices gunking up the coil. I can dry burn without worry of ruining an expensive atty. It comes off a rinse and burn just like new. I like being able to add more than a couple drops and not having to worry about flooding.
The positives give me enough reason to keep it in my rotation. The negatives are enough to want to still use premium atties also. Probably be about a 50/50 share. Maybe more since I will use most NETs in the rba. I'm excited to try experimenting with different wick material and building variations until I can get the best performance out of it.
Overall, out of the gate, I'm very happy with this addition. If I can get the performance to be up to par with a HH.357, Cisco, or Ikenvape it will take over those. The great thing is being able to experiment with coil and wick setups for just pennies.
