so i went to this vape shop i always get my coils redone for my igo w... and i usually get micro coils in 26g kanthal at .4, i think... or so my friend told me to get since he's been rebuilding for a while. this time around they gave me 27g kanthal coils, with like 5 wraps and it burned too hot, burning my cotton and my juice and giving me harsh hits. I decided to redo my own coils, for the first time, went 7 wraps on a 26g kanthal micro coil and it seems to be hitting fine with a flavor called betty wu (apple pomegranate) 6 nicotine, but when i try space jam andromeda 6 nicotine, i get harsh hits out of it. when ive gotten good coils at the vape shop, it doesn't give me harsh hits, so any idea what it could be? the coils don't look too terrible and they heat up evenly from what i can see. help?

1. Always check the resistance on new coil!
2. Use only powerful IMR batteries with coils below 1.2 ohm!!! Lower you go with resistance, more current will flow and therefor better battery you are gonna need! Too much current will damage the battery and it can harm you as well!!!!

U = R * I ; at 4 Volts ( full battery has 4.2V, then its a little voltage drop because of the conductivity losses of materials) and 0.6ohm, current is about 6.667 A!! Normal imr batteries (trustfire, ultrafire...) can handle only up to 3A max!!

Use multimeter, smoktech omnitester or vv-mod for checking the resistance! Its crucial at first, after few builds you know how much it will be..

Efest Red batteries are good enough to go low as 0.6 ohm. For 0.4 ohm and lower build you are gonna need 30A high drain Sony vtc5 battery!

so basically don't use the coil till i can check it?
Close...

Don't use the coil till you have checked it and verified that the battery you are using will have some margin of safety at the resistance you have built in those coils.

Better safe than sorry.

As for the coils, one looks like the leg overlaps the coil, with micro coils that's a bad thing to build into the coil. You want perfectly uniform coils (or as nearly perfect as is possible). Open macro coils are more forgiving.

The B&M you shop at should have an ohms checker for sale. Bring a fresh AA and check your work right there in the shop, and fix any issues.

If all you want to use it for is checking resistance on your atomizers, Cartomizer and Atomizer Ohm Meter

Or you can get a cheap multimeter just about anywhere.

As to the coils in your pic it might just be the angle, but is the leg on the far coil crossing over? Does the leg glow?

I suspect having the coils closer to the air holes might be less harsh. And, of course, the right amount of wick makes all the difference.

Those ohm checkers are great, because you can use them as a stand, while building coil. I own a multimeter so i made my own stand from wood and ego/510 adapter. Best one right now is SmokTech Omnitester, because it can measure voltage drop, so you can see which rda/rba/mech with adapter has better conductivity :)

Yeah i know, coil is gunky and ready to change :D

Happy :vapor:

the overlap happened when i was compressing them, i didn't know it was a bad thing to build into the coil. an Ohms checker? thanks, i'll ask then. an open macro coil? what kind of coil is that?

Overlap isnt that crucial. At the end you want the coil to start glowing from the middle to the outside. When the cotton/silica is in the coil and its saturated with juice, the coil shouldnt glow at all!! Wraps are tight together (most of us use that type of coil) or have space between them.

I would definitely not be sub ohm vaping if you don't know anything about your setup batteries mod etc you should ask your friend at the vape shop to start you off with a 1.5-2.0 ohm single or dual coil and then you should do some research on how to vape safe I use sony vtc5 and usually vape at .8 ohms dual coil or 1.2 ohms single coil

I would also like to add that if your new to building using 28 guage kanthal seems to work the best I just got in to building rda's and found that 28 was easy to make micro coils cause it wasn't as thin as 30g and up it made it easier to wrap I found that even if you torch 32g and up there so thin you can't really take the springiness out of them completely.

yeah, that glowing while the coil was wicked and juiced was what was happening with the build i got from the shop.... and i'm probably going to sound completely ignorant but, this is subohm vaping? ive done a bit of reading and heard it wasn't for beginners. a friend originally rebuilt my coils and when i went to replace them, told me he had given me 26g micros at .4, and to tell the shop that. i probably should've looked into things before listening to him, it seems. what kind of coils and at what ohms is safe? and will give me good flavor and vapor? for a beginner.

Somethings that could be causing the Space Jam to feel more harsh than the betty wu could be that the Space Jam has a higher PG percentage which would give you a harsher hit. If you used the same juice as before with the shop builds, some other issues could be that your coils may not be leveled with your air holes, you want to be able to look through your holes and see your coils at the same height and centered and not have your wicking material blocking any holes. Also the way you wick also makes a difference, if the coil is blocked in the front or has cotton or silica underneath it's going to be less harsh than if you're coils were open, and unblocked like it should be.
