First time building a coil, now my KangerTech battery won't fire.

So I recently bought the Optimus rda from madvapes.com and I was using the stock coil and wick, but then it started to hit my throat in a weird and bad way and not producing much vapor. So I decided to try my first build. I also recently bought some 30 gauge Kanthal wire and some cotton, which is what I used. I wrapped the wire 8 times around a nail that I measured to be 2mm. That probably isn't very accurate because I used a ruler but it didn't say a measurement on the box of nails. I'm not gonna lie, it was pretty ugly. I then inserted the leads into the posts, wrapped them one time around the posts, and screwed down the posts. Then I put the cotton through the coil, soaked it in juice, and put it on my 1000mAh KangerTech EVOD battery. However, when I press the firing button, it just blinks three times. Can anybody help me with this?

A video I watched about the Optimus said to wrap the wire around the threading of the posts so that's why I did it. It must be shorting, but why does it short only when the cover is on?
when you put that top on its possible that your coil/leads are touching it causeing it to short

Yep turns out the coil was touching the top. So now it works but doesn't produce much vapor lol. I really need to learn how to build good coils.

This issue is just because you are using an 1100 mah ego style battery. Just getting it to work is pretty good coil building. Vapor production will be a bit limited on this device. What size kanthal are you using?

30 gauge. Initially I got pretty good vapor production with the stock coil, so I know it's capable of more than what I'm getting with my coil.

if you had put your atty on the ohm checker that any sane coil builder has you would have known you had a short. Had you been using a mechanical mod you could have blown your face off. please read up on ohms law and get an ohm reader.

This is my first RDA and first coil build, so I don't have all the tools. For a cheap RDA on a cheap battery, I didn't feel like also buying an ohm reader. Plus the battery has built-in protections. I know Ohm's law well, I'm an engineering student (switching next semester but I've still dealt with Ohm's law many times).
