So I have been vaping for awhile on an iClear tank with an Evod and decided to go with a mechanical mod for a better experience. So my friend sold me his old set up which is a Black Hawk Clone with a Big Dripper clone (Yes I know they're clones, but I wanted to test out mechanical mods before I commit to an expensive set up because now I am thinking of getting a regulated mod instead of mechanical.) So my question today is what kinda dual coil set up can I do to be safe, but still have a good vaping experience. My battery is one of the purple Efest 18650 2500mAh 35A. I have seen some concern regarding these batteries with real tests, and people finding out they are just re-wrapped batteries. So to get to the point I have an efest battery, clone black hawk mech mod, and a clone big dripper with some 24G wire and I want to do a dual coil set up. My juice right now is Max VG as well.

Hello and welcome to the forum Tucker. Glad to have you here!:)

I suggest you start with a single coil using 28 gauge wire. Once you have perfected your coil buiding and wicking skills then you could experiment with dual coils and different gauge wire.

Since you are new to mech mods and rebuildables I highly recommend you spend some time with Baditude (one of our resident battery experts) and visit his blogs. You are now 100% in control of your own safety (and others around you). Make sure you purchase an ohm reader and a voltmeter or DMM so you can measure your builds, check for shorts and measure the remaining charge on your batteries.

Baditudes Blogs. The blogs regarding mods and rebuildables are listed below:

BATTERIES

9. Battery Basics for Mods: IMR or Protected ICR?
* Another essential read to understand which batteries are safe to use in mechanical and regulated mods. Includes a frequently updated list of recommended safe-chemistry, high-drain batteries with their specifications.

17. Purple Efest Batteries not as Advertised
* A cautionary blog that reveals that the purple Efest batteries may not have the specifications advertised. Also includes a commentary on "continuous discharge ratings" vs "pulse discharge ratings" of battery specs.

OHM'S LAW

14. Ohm's Law for Dummies (Vapers)
* My attempt at explaining Ohm's Law in layman terms and how it relates to vaping.

16. Explain it to the Dumb Noob: Ohm's Law Calculations
* As simple as it is to use, some people have a tough time grasping the concept. Warning: Includes graphic photos of mod explosions.

MECHANICAL MODS & REBUILDABLES

7. Information Resources for Your First RBA
* An essential read and reference guide for someone new to rebuilding coils. Includes a multitude of useful links on battery safety, mod safety, coil meters, coil building, and the differences in the three types of RBA's.

15. Inexpensive Mechanical Mod/RDA Setup
* A response to the frequently asked question on how to get into rebuildable atomizers with a mechanical mod inexpensively. Includes a list of commonly used tools and supplies for rebuilding and where to find them.

BATTERIES - WHERE TO BUY

Only buy batteries from a reputable supplier (not ebay or Amazon) as there are many counterfeit batteries being sold. Here are several reputable battery suppliers in the US.

* RTD Vapor
* Illumination Supply
* Lighthound
* Orbtronics

Hi Tucker and welcome to the forum!

About the only thing I could add to the excellent advice above is to get an ohm meter if you don't already have one. That way, you can check your coil builds for shors before putting them on your mech mod and having a bad day.

Be safe and Happy Vaping!

1: going with a mechanical mod in place of the evod battery isn't going to make a better experience.

2: I've got a big dripper; I like to put in on the deck of my flashevapor instead of using the 3 post deck that the big dripper comes with.
It's a 22mm system with orings so you should find it can work with other dripper decks so long as the airflow can work.

3: I'd encourage you towards a regulated mod as your main; I've got several mechs but they're really for backup; my main mods are vamos, and a zmax;

4: I've only done single coil setups; when people only had mechs, once you get one coil right, you add a second equal coil and so you double the power and the vape. With regulated mods, you just adjust the power to voltage to suit the coil; if you make more wraps you need more power; simple.
But as to what is 'safe' that's why there is the term 'subohm'. If you stay above 1 ohm, you are in the 'safe' zone.

5: I've got 4 of those purple efests too. and two of the lower powered red ones. I typically vape at 10 watts.

All my coils are 32, 30, and 28; I tried a 34 gauge - that's too thin.
My 28 gauge coils can run at 15 watts and my toppers can get uncomfortably hot imo;
I find myself leaning more towards 30 gauge, 2 to 4 ohms single coil.

Okay, thank you guys for all your help! Looks like once my cars engine swap is done I will be investing into a regulated mod and an ohm reader (Just don't know which to buy because I have heard of some ohm readers being off). Also, I think I may just not use the 24g kanthal right now and order up some 28G because I have read that that gauge kanthal is a good start to building your own coils. With that said is there a thread with talk about regulated mods?

There's the APV Forum (advanced personal vaporizors) and the sub forum within it Variable Voltage APV Discussion (regulated mods).

This will help with your coils. 24ga will take quite a few wraps to stay in the safe zone. Around 7 wraps will get you close to .25 ohms. (duel coil) That's about half of what the battery is rated at.

if it were really 35 amps. those are 20 amp continous batteries iirc rewrapped lghe2s
