First time using ss. Looking for some tips

So I've only used ti with a vtc mini, cuboid, vs200. All 3 I had a love hate, when they worked it was great but when they failed it was horrible. I since moved away from tc and have just been running duel claptons in a bellus on my vs200
.2ohms@70w. Now today I have a rx200 with a griffin 25 comming, I also through a roll of 24g and 26g 316l. So now that that's out of the way I did some research and it looks like I should be setting my tcr@92 and going for a build around .1-.3 @400-500°? That looks like about 7 wraps, 2.5mm with the 26g in duel coil. My questions are does that sound right? And should I be building the coil spaced or touching?

Sounds about right. Currently using a 316l dual coil in my aromamizer on a vtc mini. 26g, dual coil, 7 or 8 spaced wraps (can't remember), .2 ohm. Nothing fancy, but works nicely. Just start around 390 & work up to where you like it.

Contact coils can work, spaced just take less effort. I'd start with spaced, & try out contact later if you feel the need.

Using ss316 mode on my VTC mini.

I use a coiling tool so it's actually an extra step to space the coils but I know my ti worked better spaced so that's why I was wondering if ss had to be spaced to work well. Thanks for the input.

So it's works pretty good on the regular ss setting but when I use a 92 tcr it hits temp instantly and dosent really fire at all. I mean it's working so I won't complain but am I doing something wrong?

i'm curious why you moved away from using titanium. i was hooked the first time i used it. it's higher tcr makes it better (imo) for tc use.

I have been building since the first protank. I for the life of me couldn't deal with the hot legs. Using titanium was the only time I felt unsafe vaping. Also so inconsistent, for a hobby it's great to tinker with. But by far imo the least reliable setup. With kanthal I can go over 2 months on the same coils. I was rebuilding ti more then once a week. So far ti vs ss isn't even a comparison for me. I'll never go back to building with ti again.

    Unlike Kanthal, many (most?) of the other types of wire need to build up an oxide layer so that the windings are not shorting out.

    Hence why many folks feel spaced coils are easier to deal with.

    Hand wrapping on a winding tools rod or using a machine screw are both easy techniques for getting nice non-contact coils.

    Then again, a pair of ceramic tweezers and a little time you can squeeze, tweek, strumb and fiddle contact coils into heating evenly from the inside out.
    While the builds I have are about 50/50 (contact/spaced) I can usually fit more windings in a contact coil (and get better, higher resistance) than with spaced coils.

    Frankly, other than being a menu selection option on many modern mods I don't get the attraction for SS317L is. Personally I'd rather use NiFe or Ti (or if it MUST be SS, SS430) over SS317L.

    The oxide layer is only one part of the spaced coils equation.

    The other is not getting a nuclear hot coil in the dead center leading to accelerated wick fouling and coil crud/crust collection.

    SS and Ti both form oxide layers like kanthal.

    SS is fine to dry burn (oxide over). Most mesh folks know all about this.

    Ti oxide is very bad to inhale.

    This is my exact reasons for using ss over ti. With a rda you can just pull off the top cap and see if something's wrong. With a tank I started getting a feeling I was getting a nasty hot spot in the coil and I can't see what's going on. I just didn't like the idea of titanium. Is it because people feel like it's more accurate then ss? Iv been running 316l for a few days now and it's so much better then when I was running ti.
