Alkaline non-rechargeable would not be practical because of the cost, but would provide a good voltage. 3 NiMH rechargeable AA's would be lower, but still high enough to vape. One problem with NiMH batteries is they can't handle very low resistance, but 3 of them with a 3 ohm atomizer would still vape okay, might be a little on the weak side though. You could use 3 NiZn rechargeable batts and get voltage even a little higher than Alkalines, but I've read reports they wear out pretty fast.

You'll get much better voltage delivery with AA over AAA. Short of an involved technical explanation, with any battery, the bigger it is, the less voltage sags under load. Though, even with 3 AA NiMH batts, you're going to get a vape on the weak side. You pretty much need 4 of them, and then you need to limit yourself to an atty resistance no less than 3Ω.
