just to make it fatter. more wick equals more juice. for me it allows me to also use a lower gauge of wire and still get a higher resistance (more wick will use more wire, more wire means slightly more resistance) I find a thicker wick stays wetter longer even under high power.
I agree with Thrasher. If the protank is like my puritank (which i think it is), then the atomizer is at the bottom of a tank full of liquid so it's constantly being soaked and its such a short wick that it doesn't have to travel very far. The IGO-L is an RDA with a well, so the liquid has to go up, sort of. The folding just holds more liquid so you won't get a dry hit as often.
With micro-coils, however, there is no room for a folded wick so most people use cotton because it seems to be the fastest wicking material.
They both nailed it.. More wick, larger diameter more surface area touching the coil, the bigger the cloud.. in theory. And with more volume of wick, more juice, meaning you will drip into your RBA less often before getting a dry hit.
I'm using 3mm Silica with it folded just above the wick hole wrapped 10 times, all touching with 28g wire. Cooking at 2.1 ohms and tasting great. I ordered some 2mm to try next.
