I commented a while back in another thread about using an alternate winding. Pic here:

This has advantages and disadvantages.

Advantages:
1) Reduces shorts by putting ground connections on the outside edges of the wick.
2) Doubles up the center wire to reduce heating the positive lead where you don't want it. Heat is put where you want it...on the wick.
3) Divides the ground and provides a double-coil effect where it MAY still work if one side get's broken (although if you don't turn down the voltage, the other will fry soon thereafter).

Disadvantages:
Lower ohms. Harder to get proper ohms since it's essentially a dual coil and cuts the ohms in 1/2.

I promised in that other post to try it with thinner wire...well....reporting back...it's working great. The coil is glowing very uniformly across the top of the SS mesh that I'm using. Not glowing (that I can tell) down the center where I don't want it. I still have to turn my VV way down, so it's probably not as efficient on battery life (linear regulator box mod) but over all I'm happy with it.

Now to see how long it lasts. Anyone else using the dual-coil wrap?

Now that I have higher resistance wire, it's easier to use this method that it was before. So...yes.

It's not a new idea. Basically all the Dual-coil stuff on the market is doing some variant of this...if you think about the wiring diagram.

The main thing for me was avoiding shorts to the outside edge without having to use that little silica sheath insert.
