Might I suggest you purchase a rebuild kit? For one thing, a used REO might have had the spring collapse and then pulled back up. It might not collapse in case of a short.

With the kit you will virtually have a new REO inside. Only the delrin cover and the connection will be used.

I think doing the polished finish is a good way to start. Then you can decide on paint or engraving.

You picked up a fantastic deal and have yourself a fine REO!

Wear the Reonaut title proud! You done good!

I am jealous.

Another option is to leave as is cosmetically and it's your rough use reo to keep the others pristine.

Thanks to my phone, I could have posted this from anywhere.

Yeah, we need one for going out, one for the coffee table, one to show off to company (behind glass), one for the car, one for the truck, one to take to bars, one to take fishing.........THIS can be your one for "rough use"....

after 6 cycles through the Ultrasonic cleaner, just spent about an hour dipping the Grand in boiled water and scraping with a finger nail and a wooden toothpick then dipping again and scraping.....several times and have now removed all the blue paint from the top and the inside.
Put it all back together and it vapes like a train.
spent about 5 minutes with some Solvol Autosol just to get an idea of how it might look if polished.
I will have to use a polishing machine along with some 1200 grade wet and dry to remove the deeper scratches before polishing again.
here is a couple of pics after tonight`s work.

OH, so there WERE door magnets behind that paint. Good.

Yes, but is that the original paint or has somebody tried to modify it.
As I said, I could not tell the colour or the finish from the Ebay details. I could see the top was blueish and I presume it was diy polished to remove all the external paint but there was a tad of blue paint over the 510 connector so perhaps someone set about it with a childs painting set. I am very happy with it as no mater what I do, it will be an improvement.

Lol, Thanks Raynman, I will post my progress. It is in the sonic cleaner as we speak for the first of several runs. The photos do not do justice to how dirty it was, the previous owner didnt even bother to empty out the juice bottle, plus I dont even know if it works yet but as I have learned from here, there is not too much to go wrong so should have it up and running later just to test.

It looks to me like the spring was compressed as well, which could have been from having the kick in it. However, I would consider a complete rebuild kit. Based on the things you can see, there was obviously no maintenance done on it, so the firing pin is probably coated beyond belief.

Here are a few more photos of my progress.

These show the pitted surfaces being removed by using coarse down to fine abrasive papers in an orbital sander.

The first, pic shows some concentrated sanding, using a Dremel. Some of the pitting in the aluminium was quite deep.
The second and third pic is after using some 80, 180 and 240 grit abrasive
The forth pic 800 and 1000 grit
The fifth pic is after 1200 and 2000 grade Wet and Dry Carborundum paper.
