Where can I find out how to respond to posts, etc? Half the time I do it, the response ends up somewhere I did not intend for it to go or I get logged out or something. There are three things you can click that bring up a response window but I don't know and have not been able to find out, what the difference between them is.

Is this some kind of cult/initiation deal--May I have another please, sir--or maybe one of those games where you have to wander around picking up clues? I'm too old for this, I never had these problems when I was smoking. Maybe that's it, not smoking prolongs your life but lowers you intellectual capacity or maybe you don't really live longer, it just seems longer because you don't know what the hell's going on.

Click "reply with quote" in the lower right of the post that you are responding too.

Okay, that's two of the five possibilities I see in front of me.

1. The right side of the blue bar at the bottom of the previous message has a curved arrow with "Reply"
2. Right next to that is "Reply with quote"
3. Below that bar and on the left is an oval with "+ Reply to Thread"
4. Immediately under that is that curvy arrow with "Quick Reply"
5. At the bottom of the box I'm typing this is a small box with "Post Quick Reply"

Sometimes after I submit a response, it will appear in the middle of the thread, as shown by the Hybrid View thread list or whatever it's called. Sometimes the response ends up at the bottom of the thread. Sometimes I get disconnected and the damn thing ends up who knows where, maybe "the cloud", maybe Hibbing, Minnesota for all I know. Some guy might be watching gay porn--not that there's anything wrong with that--and my geezer rant scrolls across his screen.

So, my question is: Where on this forum, or elsewhere can I go to find out what all these various reply buttons, clicks, boxes and oval do? Is it written down somewhere and I can just read it or should I just try each of them and strain the forbearance of my fellow forum folks. Eeew, too much alliteration. Or should I try the cancel button. Wonder what tha

I'm using a different forum skin than you so I don't have the same colors, I'm just going by location. I didn't feel like going crazy quoting stuff, so the bold text is my reply.

1. The right side of the blue bar at the bottom of the previous message has a curved arrow with "Reply" - That just does a straight reply to the thread and will be at the bottom (most current post)
2. Right next to that is "Reply with quote" - Use that to reply directly to a post. It will automatically put in the quote tags and text for you. Do not erase any of the info unless you don't want it showing. Just scroll down and type below all the quoted material
3. Below that bar and on the left is an oval with "+ Reply to Thread" - That does the same thing as the "Reply" button
4. Immediately under that is that curvy arrow with "Quick Reply" - Does the same as above
5. At the bottom of the box I'm typing this is a small box with "Post Quick Reply" - Once again, just a standard reply like the two previous ones. Your only options when replying are to reply with quote or to just add a straight reply to the thread

If your response is showing up in the middle of the thread it's because other people posted after you submitted yours. The newest reply will always be the last one in the thread. Thanks! That sorts everything out nicely. No way to reply to a comment, not the original, but without quotes, huh? I hate pasting a whole, long post if my comment is only brief. Guess I'm gonna have to delete the irrelevant stuff. How do guys manage several quotes with comments in between, like an individual reply to each paragraph or section? Oh, well, at least now I know more and can figure the rest out from here. Part of the problem is ego, I hate looking like an incompetent boob in public. Actually being one does not bother me near as much, just so I look competent. "Don't be a schnook, it's not how you feel, it's how you look"... words to live by.

Breaking up quotes is tougher, and requires you to do a little more work.

Basically, you click on reply with qutoe, and a box will open with the quote already formatted. at the beginning of the quote, there will be a piece of code with "QUOTE= USERNAME" IN Brackets, and "/quote" in brackets at the end.

You need to type in the "/quote" in brackets at the point you want to break up the quote, then type in your reply, and then start up the quote again with the quote=username code.

Hope that makes sense.

When you want to break up a post into separate quotes it can be a bit of a pain in the ... (which is why I didn't do it in my previous post). Multi-quoting can also be a hassle.

It really just takes some time to get used to it and know what the different tags do.

I've been posting on boards since 1998 and still confuse myself sometimes when doing multi-quotes and trying to get the formatting right for a post. I hate it when I miss one "/" for a tag on a long post and have to go back and correct it.
