So, I love my REO Grand + RM2. It's the only mod I use after trying very many. My problem is this..I use 30 or 28awg wire and cotton wicks. When I build a new coil and change out the wick I have a very nice vape for about a day, but then the coil starts to blacken and taste suffers. I've tried just replacing the wick and that helps but I still get a not as tasty vape from what I'm assuming can only be from the coil itself. So, I'll build a new coil..mini at around 6-7 wraps coming out to about .9 or 1ohm. All is good..but only for a limited amount of time. Anyone have any tips? Thanks so much.

Nice tip crash moses, i use a qtip for the outside parts of the coil I can reach.

My coils get that crud as well, especially at .6 ot .5 ohms. Can you still see residue after dry burning?

I too have noticed an increased build up of crud when vaping sweet juices. Changing coils everyday might just be the nature of the beast if your ADV is causing this. Sucks but could be worse.

Ditto to what yaypudding and pufZeppelin said. I know with some juices I have to knock the carbon off after a good dryburn. Also, I wrap my coils with drill bits and running the drill bit through after dry burning helps clean the carbon out of the inside.
Great tip, thanks CM

Your biulds sound almost identical to mine. I dry-burn and replace my wick daily. If Ill I did was replace the wick, I'd eventually taste the black gunk.

My daily regimen:

1. Remove whatever atomizer I've got atop the REO...sip beer

2. Remove wick...sip beer

3. Rinse atomizer under warm water and dry off (don't forget to blow air through 510 connection to remove excess water)...sip beer

4. Reattach atomizer base to REO...sip beer

5. Dry-burn coil (3-5 second bursts of power to get it glowing nice and bright...probably about a dozen or so bursts) until it turns silver...sip beer

6. Insert new wick...sip beer

7. Replace cap...sip beer

8. Squonk enough to completely submerge wick and coil...let excess drain back into bottle...sip beer

9. Vape away...sip beer

with the mix I currently use.. I change the wick and dry burn the coil every day. It only takes a couple minutes. Once I remove the cotton and dry burn the gunk off, I then rinse the coil with water and pulse it to dry it. I then have a brand new coil. I found that I needed to rinse the coil after dry burning or I'd get an "off" taste.

I can only assume you meant to sip beer between each dry firing? I'd hate to miss a step ;)

I've noticed some nice build up after a few days if I vape sweeter juices at 0.9 ohms. It seems to be worse if the juice has a higher percentage of VG. This has been with a RSST.

I don't wrap my coils using a screwdriver, drillbit, etc, but they're just simple ones with SS mesh. When they get too nasty, I just make a new wick n' coil.

WOW ! what's that, during use or after cleaning ? ?

I forgot to look at pic and just now did so

yeah that's a dirty `ole coil, leading to -Y U K- Taste

surely give it a GOOD burn off, till it turns white ash, and get that ash off

watch/smell the clouds come off - it might take some PGA/Vodka to
remove the burnt taste from metal after burning...
