I just posted in another thread about this possibility for me, as well. I think I didn't follow the 10/10 rule and started to vape right away, overheating the atty. I was wondering if I followed the 10/10 rule, I might be able to save it.
If the insulator ring is now blocking the holes, I think it is a goner. I thought about drilling through it, but since the ring separates the positive and negative currents, I don't want a screwed up atty to short my REO.
I threw it away, but this is what I remember: I took a bead reamer and enlarged the holes at the side of the atty. When I tried to poke through a hole, I hit something rubbery. When I took out a magnifying glass and looked at it closely, I saw white rubber through the hole.
