preface: I suspect the answers to the following post will be to get a 510 or Prodigy, but if that's you're answer, please tell me why and from whom I should order! Or if you're a lover of the 901, please share your secrets

I got a DSE 901 started kit a few weeks ago and the giant sample pack of juice from JC, and while it's been working off and on, the inconstancy is killing me. No vapor, too much vapor, burnt taste, liquid in the mouth. I managed to flood both my attys over the weekend trying to get the ^&*%ing thing to work, meaning I had to shell out $12 for a pack of analogs to kill the rage and the nicfit.

The vapor is mostly weak and flavorless, which I find disappointing after all the fluffing JC juice gets on this forum. I feel like I'm sucking on a straw when a milkshake is too cold. And still nothing comes out. The only time I can get a good drag is when I pull long and slow, like on a cigar. But I didn't smoke cigars and want something I can draw from quick and dirty, like an analog.

Analogs are prohibitively expensive in NYC. I need to get this thing working!

All part of learning the ropes with these things Flash. I getcha... frustrating, BUT it will get better.

Sounds like you are experiencing too much liquid and not enough liquid. Refilling and keeping the atomizer at just the right wetness is the first thing to conquor with ANY e-cig. Any model is going to be disapointing until you learn how to run them well.

No vapor and sucks like a milkshake? Try blowing it out over a paper towel.

Burned taste, add a drop to your atomizer bridge and keep the cartridge topped off. Try the straw modification to get liquid to wick out of the cartridge better.

Blow lightly into the mouthpiece after you refill to blow down any liquid that has leaked up into the mouthpiece to help avoid getting mouthfulls.

Therein lies the problem! .... and as far as I know, what you are looking for doesn't exist.

I have never used a 901, but I have experienced many of the problems you have with my 510. It does take some time to get it right. It is not as easy as smoking a cigarette.

Try this, remove the material from your cartridge. Blow out the atty into a paper towel 2 or 3 times. Then put the atty back on and drip ONLY 2 drops onto the atty bridge. Then put the empty cart back on and vape a few puffs. If that is what you are looking for, you are having trouble either getting too much or too little liquid to the atty. And that is one of the biggest issues with these things. They are very sensitive to the amount of liquid in the atty. Too much, gurgle, gurgle hard draw, low vapor. Too little, hot draw and burnt taste in your mouth. I only drip now because I could never get it right with filling a cart. Some do, some don't. But be careful dripping with the 901 unless it is a manual battery model...

The 901 doesn't draw like an .... log. Period. It just doesn't.

The batteries are ...... well to say the least inconsistant. Even when my attys are working fine and the juice just right if the battery isn't heating at optimum (which I found it rarely did) the atty can't heat the juice to vapor.... and it's 'soup' not vapor.

I started out with DSE 901
then bought a USB passthrough - thought I was going to have to carry my laptop around as a power supply

then invested in a 'battery mod' - I chose a ScrewDriver.
Battery mods use DEPENDABLE - rechargeable reg. bats that are about $2 and last with consistant power every puff - for 6-8 hours.

I still have my e-cig bats - just in case I ever need them. AND I use the DSE 901 attys on a 'mod' that allows it to function properly.

You can find 'mods' on the classifieds on this forum. If you're handy there's also a whole area dedicated to building them yourself.

I love the DSE901 and get great flavor and vapor - with a moderate 'draw' not exactly like puffing a cig - but not with the 901 batteries.

Many people want their e-cig to look like an analog - my top priority is replacing my nicotine from cigs with vaping - not necessary that the device looks like a cigarette. And no one ever mistakes my ScrewDriver for an .... log.

PS - while some may claim a 510 (or anything else that looks most like an .... log) is a 'step up'.... it's still probably not going to give you the consistancy and bat length/lifespan you're looking for. I highly recommend you use the 901 attys on a mod.

You may want to consider getting a vaporking or KR808D1 2 piece cartomizer model. They tend to draw a little harder and hotter than a 3 piece model, more like an analog. The downside is that the cartomizers can be a bit more expensive overall. This expense can be mitigated by refilling but cartomizers can reasonably only be refilled once or twice before vapor production really drops off. I like using my KR808D1 with greencig carts. The greencig cart seems to be the most advanced cartomizer model and refills far better than any other cartomizer I've tried.

IMO, a fresh cartomizer with a fresh battery is the best combination of draw, throat hit and vapor production out there. The problem is that without refilling, it is an extremely expensive option.

I have a 510, and it hits consistently every time. The moment the hit loses vapor or taste, I know it's time to top off my cart. My Janty Stick is pretty much the same way.

Vaping is not the same as smoking. You have to take it slow and easy. Quick and dirty will get you bad hits or even nic juice in your mouth. You kinda have to retrain your brain to realize things have to be done differently. Slow and easy gets you big, flavorful hits. Much more enjoyable.

So yes, I would recommend a 510 to you. It works like a champ for me. Make an allowance for charging the batteries (extra charger & batts, or a PCC) because you'll be charging them a lot if you do any serious vaping.

As far as juice... give some flavors from ecigsmokestore a try. Dawn is a master at mixing, and her flavors are flippin' delicious. You cannot go wrong. There is a reason that some of us are serious fans of her stuff. Vaping makes quitting smoking easy. Dawn's juice makes it an extremely pleasurable experience. Don't limit yourself to just tobacco flavors. Right now, I'm puffing away on 24mg cappucino... it's awesome.

I used to have the 901. I had the same trouble... hard draw and inconstancy.

If you are going to stay with 3.7 volts, go with a 510 for sure.

If you go high power, I reccomend an 801.

I have the Prodigy with SLB801. I am absolutely satisfied.

5 volts is the only way to go.

I'm not concerned with my pv looking like an analog, just more throat hit like an analog. I'll look into mods and other juices.

I had an auto 901 when I first started. Had the same problems that you are having. No amount of "new vaping methods" will make them consistent. There are devices that vape close to the same as an analog but they are not well received by some on this forum. Sorry for your troubles.
