Does anyone here know where the nicotine used in e cigs comes from? I'm not talking about where to buy e juice, and I'm not trying to locate dangerously pure nicotine. When I start mixing my own flavors, I know where to get unflavored e juice in applicable strengths.

What I'm talking about is the source of the nicotine for companies like Halo, Johnson Creek, and the One Stop DIY shop. Not what country or lab that supplies them, but is the nicotine used for their e juices created synthetically, or is it extracted from tobacco?

Thanks.

I believe it's primarily extracted, using something called a supercritical CO2 extraction method. It's not economical to synthesize it.

That's the answer I was hoping for. If the FDA wants to ban e cigs, or even crack down on them through regulation, they potentially have a powerful ally in the cigarette industry (LOBBYISTS), who have a vested interest in analogs. If nicotine used in e cigs is extracted, at the very least that supports tobacco growers, who are a somewhat powerful lobby in their own right. Also, considering the cigarette companies add nicotine to their tobacco to boost the potency, then they are likely the pioneers in the extraction method. Makes me wonder if the cigarette companies are the top tier for supplying the nicotine in e cigs. If they are that could actually be a good thing as their interest wouldn't be solely vested in analogs, as long as they do/did take the initiative to get involved with supplying extracted nicotine to the e cig industry.

Oh God...I hope its not BT that is supplying the nic juice.....they can put whatever they want in it.....

Not the juice, no, that would be BAD. Just the extracted nicotine that companies like Johnson Creek, or Halo, or whomever mix with PG and VG to make their blank and flavored e juices. Tested and verified by a third party for purity (ie. no additives) would be preferred.

That would mean that powerful lobbyists had an interest in seeing that e cigs never get banned. Ultimately, BT could quit producing analogs altogether, and just crank out extracted nicotine (sans additives) to the e juice companies. They could keep their profits, and everyone could happily keep vaping.

If it were economical to synthesize nicotine, then tobacco farmers and BT would be left out of the e cig loop completely, which would only put them on the FDA's side in trying to get e cigs banned (to eliminate their competition). Of course the primary reason the FDA would ban e cigs is the nicotine, which is in analogs, and BT doesn't want the FDA regulating analogs anymore than they are already regulated.

Big tobacco is not a concern for vaping. It's the Big Phamaceutical companies that are doing everything possible to kill this industry and this product. They supply the money to the "anti's" who distort and lie about vaping.

I just hope the FDA will decide to do some "real" testing on ecigs, but it seems they would rather base their opinions on one study that has been discredited. The problem is that someone is behind the FDA wanting to ban these so bad with no evidence to do so. Now, I'm sure there are people that have legitimate concerns about ecigs but the whole lets ban these first when there hasn't been any adverse effects (that I know of), and then let somebody try to prove their safe thing doesn't make sense. The FDA leaves dangerous products on shelves everyday that are KNOWN to be dangerous.

Somebody has a lot of money in this and it has to be BT or Big pharma. It's certainly not a few health officials with concerns pushing the FDA to go against court rulings to block shipments. If BT is indeed behind the nic in ejuice then it wouldn't be them but who knows. Either way, we better all hope the courts continue to stand up to the FDA.

Because it will eventually cut down on the need for ten million different (and expensive) forms of chemo-therapy? Or because it cuts into the market share for nicotine gums and patches?

I don't think they make much money on the NRT's, but their whole profit margin could be based on therapies for other smoking related diseases from heart disease to asthma. ED pills, BP pills, nebulizers, reflux meds.... etc... etc....etc....

Good point. Big pharma relies on chronic illness to line their pockets. That creates lifetime customers. Cigarettes are the #1 controllable risk factor for developing the most prevalent chronic illnesses. And while they probably don't turn a big profit from NRTs I can gaurantee you they get at least tax breaks to make them, probably even gov subsidies.

I didn't think of those things. Scary to think how much the pharma industry relies on smokers. The healthcare industry should really be called the anti-health care industry.

Maybe even BT doesn't deserve as much of the blame for cigarettes as we give them. Of course, if all BT did was supply e juice manufacturers with nicotine (on the tobacco end of things), they'd probably make less profit than they do with analogs.

I don't think the pharma companies really want vaping banned. They just want in on the action. If they can grab control and make profit off of it, it's great for them. It fits right into their business model, perpetual treatment. They've pushed for vitamin C to be made a drug so they can get in on that action for a long long time for example.

Curious to see who actually gets control of vaporizers in the end.

I disagree. I have no problem with big tobacco, they are not the problem. Big government, on the other hand, will kill you in a heart beat if it benefits them.

The problem with big tobacco is that they are intimately involved with big government. How do you think cigs have stayed around so long? The gov. loves BT. They're like the red headed step child to the gov. It's something they can always beat more money out of with the threat of banning them. I for one don't want to see my ecigs get anywhere near that relationship. Look what's happened to the price of cigs. Don't really want to end up paying $30 for a 10 ml bottle of juice.

How Scary and sad that companies can pressure government into legislating in corporate interests rather than citizens' best interest.

Big Pharm makes millions on the ineffective NRT products. They know that vaping will kill that business. I know someone well connected to the pharmaceutical industry and the FDA. They told me that Big Pharm pressured the FDA, the ACS, the ALA and their contacts in Congress through their lobbyist to stop the importing of PV's. It was no accident that Senator Lautenberg of NJ came out strong against PV's back in 2009. His largest campain contributors are two of the largest pharmaceutical companies in America who happen to have their headquarters in NJ.
