General Question

I usually have a cup/bottle of water near by, but also depends what flavor I'm vaping. The more traditional tobacco flavors I get locally tend to dry my throat out as well, but they only use 50/50. The more complex flavors I vape tend to deviate from that dry hit feeling. Have you tried using the volt/ohm chart to try and get the sweet spot? Its just a suggestion chart from what I understand, but it helps me kinda get an idea on my setup.

Yes, it's extremely common - particularly for those who've just started.

Some tips:

1) Inhale less - plenty of nicotine is absorbed through the mouth and nose with vapour, no need to involve the lungs (and by extension, the throat)

2) Sip drinks - vapour contains humectants, which will dry out your respiratory tract. You don't need to be downing pints of water, but having something to sip makes a difference.

3) Experiment with juices - some find a higher VG mix less irritating to the throat. Most liquids have more PG.

Vaping dehydrates people. I drink lots of water. If your vaping starts to irritate your throat it could be that you are inhaling the vapor as you puff on you vaporizer instead of just bringing the vapor into your mouth and then inhaling ... that helped me a lot with throat irritation. Also if you keep having throat irritation you might have a mild PG allergy and need to use a juice that has a higher VG content.
Good Luck

...Didn't know that a higher VG mix would also help out.

It might not - that's very dependent on the person. It might even make it worse :)

But with a bit of time to get used to it and experimentation I think most people are able to vape now and then without a drink on hand. For heavy vaping sessions, I think most people recommend having a drink, even if they're used to it and have their equipment and liquid selection perfected.
