Whats with the second hole in a single coil genny? i get it makes for easy filling, but is there any reason to leave it open? i dont own one but have been looking into getting them and all the single coil ones ive seen just have it sitting open. does it have somethingto do with the wicking? like preventing a vacuum from forming in the tank?

You're spot on. Filling and preventing a negative pressure from forming in the tank as liquids deplete - effectively stopping wicking.

I leave the hole open on the gennies I use at home. For no real reason, really. Just convenience of filling and no need for leak-proofing, I guess.

The gennies I use outside, I usually plug up the hole with a smaller hole. One too small for liquids to escape, but still large enough for air to enter. Doesn't take much. Such holes can be found in the nozzle of e-liquid bottles. Some of them make great plugs. Others will simply break surface tension and promote leaking. Trick is to find the right one. The ones that look the most like a plastic syringe needle works the best for me.

Speaking of which, I've been wondering lately if it would be effective to have an additional very small diameter hole (too small for liquid to get through due to surface tension, but large enough to allow pressure equalization) through the deck of a gennie.

This would allow the fill hole to remain completely plugged while still allowing equalization of tank pressure, all with no leaks! (In my head anyway...)

Has this been tried?

The Kraken (original!) has done this to some extent. The fill hole is much smaller than on most other atties. It's not a separate vent hole like you're thinking, tho. This is one of the things the clones (I've seen) gets wrong. Fill hole is same size as wick holes.

Even tho the Kraken is my most non-leaky gennie out of the box*, I still plug it up with a smaller hole just to prevent those occasional leaks. It hasn't leaked often, but once is too many.

*Edit: Just remembered... that award would go to the Svarog. It would take effort to make that puppy leak. The air hole is on a post, sticking up from the deck.
