About a month ago I bought a AGA-T+ and was really happy with it at first. After a couple weeks I started having problems. I don't know if I started doing something different or what but now no matter what I try I can't get rid of that burnt taste from the top of the coil lighting up where it connects to the center post. I've tried doubling up the leg going from the mesh to the post but that doesn't seem to help. Anybody have any tips for me? Thanks in advance!

John,

It sounds to me like you have the very common problem of hot legs in your genny. If you fire your coil with no juice on the wick, does the whole coil glow? Or just the top piece of wire which attaches to the positive post in the center? For me, with an AGA-T2, this has been the number one problem with my builds. My solution was to ditch SS mesh in favor of cotton and micro coils, although YMMV.

what you have to understand is that SS mesh (or cable) acts as a massive heat sink. The majority of your coil, by design, is in contact with this heat sink. Thus, the actual wraps of your coil are cooler than the legs, especially the positive leg. This hot leg is probably what's giving you that burnt taste.

As for how to fix it, if you want to stay with SS mesh, then you can google around or search the forums for videos and post regarding this typical problem. Many people suggest placing a #2 washer between the top two nuts of the positive post (which is where you put the pos leg of your coil, right?) to reduce the distance between electrical contact on the coil and the wick. Other tips/tricks are to adjust the tension on the pos leg, and to move/bend the SS wick towards the pos post, without touching it of course. Reducing the length of free pos leg you have, will reduce your likelihood of having a hot leg.

Hope this helps!

I have been using a genesis style for a while now and when I end up with issues I:

1. Make sure the coil legs are equal length, it really helps.
2. Make sure the coil touches the wick throughout the whole coil especially at the top and bottom, if not it will increase the leg length.
3. Make sure your wick is oxidized where ever it touches metal (wick hole or inside the tank)
4. Make sure there are no loose threads of mesh, fold each end in about 1mm when rolling a wick this minimizes loose threads of mesh.

Those should take care of 99% of issues.

practice, practice, practice ... It won't seem like you're doing anything different but it does get more consistent.

Try silica, ekowool or cotton wick. Try a micro coil. Try thicker gauge wire. If you get those to work then you know it's not your coil, it's the wick.

I am a big fan of SS wicks, but getting them to work consistently is truly a pain. Coils getting residual build-up on them and the heat sink issues almost make it not worth the effort. I still have one setup with SS, but since I started building micro coils with cotton wicking, it is my main setup on my genesis rba's. The performance and ease of setup are unbelievable.

the tension of the coil must be pretty dead even from top leg to bottom leg, many report the center posts on the agi's move and even pop up or down and turn when screwing them onto a mod. if the wire changes tension or the wick is loose in the hole and moves around this will cause all kinds of problems. many times we dont even notice this when we tighten the top screw onto the wire pulling it tighter or looser.

also in these situations it helps to make sure the wick isnt contacting the bottom of the tank if it is metal, once the wick is well seasoned and oxidized it wont matter.

Thanks for the advice. I finally realized that I was using the higher resistance wire that I got for my other builds and switched back to a lower res kanthal and that seems to have mostly resolved the issue so far. Funny sidebar: I took off the cover to take a look at the coil again after having vaped it for several minutes and then zoned out watching Breaking Bad. Now, when I vape my genny style I always hold it in my hand so that when I bring it up the angle keeps the wick submerged in e-liquid. Which, incidentally means the wick is on the side nearest my mouth. So, when I automatically brought it back to my lips to vape again having forgotten the cover was gone....... yup..... burning coil directly to lower lip. That's gonna feel GREAT tomorrow.
