Oh man... I've heard about this before and if they got rid of Saturday delivery I'd be ......! Now I've said in another thread that I am happy with USPS for the most part, and I am, but a two day gap in delivery would really suck, I don't even like the fact that we don't get deliveries on Sunday! I'd rather they just doubled all of their shipping fees. It's bad enough they don't deliver twice per day like my parents said they used to back in the day...
If I can I will go and see if there is a petition for me to sign.

The USPS has a 2006 mandate by congress that requires the USPS to pre-fund most of the retiree health benefits payable over the next 75 years within a decade – something no other public agency or private firm does. The resulting annual payments run $5.5 billion a year. They have an approximately $75 billion dollar surplus in the their account. They are prepaying benefits for USPS employees that aren't even born yet. All that money like the baby boomers' huge social security surplus is already spent by congress, thus the problem. All those over payments are a major reason they are running a deficit. UPS and Fedex are not subject to that mandate.

While USPS has a protected monopoly like Major League Baseball, Congress sets their rates and mandates delivery. It isn't just the rural areas the private carriers will skip, it's the dangerous neighborhoods and ones that don't have an efficient place for their trucks to pull up. See how far UPS or FedEx will deliver your wedding invitation or Xmas cards for 44 cents.

Mandated mail delivery is good for society as a whole and allows equal access by all citizens. Saturday open post offices and delivery is good for some businesses and people that work M-F 9-5 and doesn't block delivery progress for two days every week. All those Monday delivered goodies would not be in your mailboxes if they shut every weekend and the carriers had to handle 3 days of mail every Monday.

Ok guys, first off, the US Postal service can't NOT deliver. UPS and all the freight companies can refuse to deliver to any address. The postal service HAS to service if there is an address, they got no choice.

That's not true. I've personally been in a situation where the post office decided not to deliver to my house. They also didn't tell me that they weren't delivering, even after I went to the post office and asked what the deal was. It took months to get it straightened out. Eventually, there was a story about a "bad dog" and such, but it took a long time and some extra effort on my part to figure that out since when I would go ask they would tell me "There isn't a problem".

Now, that said, they may not be able to choose areas and say "That's not in our delivery area, nobody out there is going to get mail". Maybe. I'm not even convinced about that, because I think I've read about little stores that are the closest thing to a town for miles that act as the local post office, and anyone in that area has to come to the store to get their mail.

I think the USPS does a good job overall. With the exception mentioned above where they stopped delivering to me and wouldn't explain it, I've had very good experiences with them.

I don't really care if they deliver on Saturday though. Personally, if they want to drop one day a week, I'd just as soon them do it on Wednesday or Thursday. If you drop Saturday delivery, since they already don't deliver on Sunday, it means a 2 day period with no delivery. By dropping a day mid-week, there are still 2 days where they don't deliver, but they aren't back to back.

That's true, thanks for the info. It's good that they're postponing it for two years though. Got plenty of things to order before then.

Actually, I heard on the news yesterday that the USPS's plan to stop Saturday mail delivery has been put on hold for two years.

They are going to attempt to implement other cost cutting methods before going to 5 day delivery as a last resort.

I don't know if a petition would do much good anyway........they are operating at 8 billion dollars in the red, so drastic measures will be needed for them to keep their head above water.
