When you say regulated mod, is the VAMO, SID and others while mechanical mod is the bolt ? How do you differ from the two, is it from the feature of VV ? Also, how do you tell which batteries are protected or not ? Is it when there is IMR in the name means its unprotected ? Thank you badtitude for answering my questions.
The Bolt isn't a mechanical mod, it's a plain mod, if you use the batteries I suggested earlier they have the protection built in: Batteries : Panasonic NCR18650B 3400mAh Protected Button Top
As for the Bolt it's self, check out Mad Vapes or SmokTek.com, and don't forget an extension ring or the 18650 won't fit. I use the Smok 1.7 ohm Single coil on my mods, but in a carto tank, you may want to look at them also, Smok has several different types. I use the two hole and have no wicking problems, stay away from the ones with a locking ring on the bottom, for some reason they just won't work right.

Are those carto tank you use look like these? SMOKTech 510 Dual Coil Tank Combo
I happen to have one of these but at 1.5ohm, according to the chart, it is a little bit off for a 3.7v ? And if I get a 1.7ohm atom like the ones in smoktek.com will it be compatible with it ?

The lower the ohms the hotter the vape and the shorter the battery life, as it draws more amps. On an unregulated, I like 1.5-1.8 ohms for the most part, this keeps me around 8-9 watts and still a decent battery life.
A mech, or unregulated mod has no electronics in it, there is not protection circuit to prevent the battery from thermal runaway, or keep the user from pushing the battery beyond it's limits. The user has to know and understand what they are asking it to do and make sure it's safe to do it. Really not all that hard, we did it for years with minimal problems, but with people feeling the need to push things to the limit any more, we have to put out the disclaimers.
A regulated mod, be it VV or VW has a chip in it with several layers of protection built into it. If you are trying to use too many amps, it wont fire, if you are trying to use too many watts, it shuts down and wont fire. If you hold the fire button in too long, it shuts down and quits firing until the button is released and you push it in again. This is all done to protect the end user from something bad happening.
Hope that helps explain that better.

Mechanical mod - metal tube with only a battery, fire switch, and juice connector. No safety features. Ie Smoktech Bolt

Regulated mod - metal tube like a mechanical mod, but also has an electrical processor (mini computer) with voltage regulation, allowing variable voltage. Also includes built-in protection against short circuits. These will have an LED display window. Ie SID, Vamo, SVD, MVP, Evic, Provari, etc.

It can be extremely difficult to know which batteries are IMR or hybrids or protected ICR. Hopefully the product description will provide that information. If not, I have a list of recommended IMR and hybrid batteries in the first link below. Pay attention to the letters/numbers for each model.

There are basically 4 types of mod batteries:

  • Protected ICR batteries (li-ion)
  • Un-protected ICR batteries (li-ion) - (never use in a mod; only for flashlights or laptops)
  • IMR (li-mn) - also called unprotected, but more correctly called safe chemistry, high drain batteries. Recommended for all mods.
  • hybrid - combination of IMR and ICR batteries, also considered safe chemistry, high drain. Also recommended.

Ahh okay, thank you guys that really cleared up everything.. So basically mech mods don't show the battery percentage, when do I charge it ? Just whenever I can ? I've read that you can't discharge it below 2.4v or sth ?

Some regulated mods will alert you when the battery is low and needs to be replaced by a blinking fire button. Others, the mod will just not fire the juice attachment. These mods have a built in battery voltage meter which will give the voltage in the LED screen. They also have a built in ohm meter.

Most times you will notice a drastic drop in either vapor or throat hit well before it's over discharged.
