I am super excited and i got my wire and cotton before the Mutation X V2 since I have never built before I was impatient and tried to freehand a coil.
Was curious if this is a valiant first attempt.

Personally I think it looks a bit dodgey, so I figured why not have some people tell me if I am on the right track.

OK make sure you have done your homework. You need a good working knowledge of Ohms law. You make a mistake and draw to much current and you could have a bad day and if your lucky the battery(ies) vent and you have to toss them/it. Also need to know battery safety. Make sure the battery you are using will be able to handle the build you put on it. Here is a site that will help you out with the calculations of how to build the coil and an Ohms law section also. Here is a pick that show what all the things in ohms law stand for also. Ohm's law | Steam Engine | free vaping calculators
Ohms law explained simply.jpg. As far as the coil you made it looks good. More important do you know it's resistance. LOL One other thing. I have all kinds of doodads to make coils and I prefer this little guy. $4.02 Vaping Coil Winding Jig Tool for Rebuildable Atomizers - aluminum / grey / 1.0mm + 1.6mm + 2.4mm + 3.0mm + 3.2mm + 3.5mm winding rods at FastTech - Worldwide Free Shipping

But if I were to buy a new coil tool I would get this. $6.35 Vaping Coil Winding Jig Tool for Rebuildable Atomizers - chromed brass / 1.0mm + 1.6mm + 2.4mm + 3.2mm + 3.5mm winding rods at FastTech - Worldwide Free Shipping
Hope it all works out good for you. Sorry about soap box but I made someone a promise to make sure all that I gave advise to got this speech. Because a bad day can be a burned hand or face if a battery goes Chernobyl on you. Hers to not being on the 6pm news. LOL Oh IMO I have had the best luck with a quad Vertical I believe I used 26ga Kanthal a1 3.5mm diameter 12 turns with Organic Japanese Cotton. This stuff is better than anything else I have used. And I have used them all I think.

Oh forgot to recommend some tools. Tweezers preferably the kind with a ceramic tip so you can shape a coil or fix a hot spot with power applied and the coil hot. Beyond that a regular pair of tweezers, cutters which can be a nail clipper if need be and various size small screwdrivers and maybe needle nose pliers.

Looks like you need to anneal the kanthal before winding. Should get all those little lumps out. They can cause hot spots, especially when building a compressed coil, since the turns won't lay flat against each other.

I use 2 pair of hemostats, one to hold the wire and one as a weight on the end. Torch it and let gravity straighten it out. The pre-torching also burns off any impurities from manufacture.

As Steve says, or at least implies, there's no room for "guessing" at the resistance. Measure it. If good, dry fire and inspect it. If good, wick and re-measure it - things can go unexpectedly south when wicking.

Know your battery capabilities and ALWAYS err on the side of safety.

I wouldn't ever consider vaping a coil without knowing how many ohms it is.

Sona, is it Kanthal, 28 gauge, 6 wraps? What is the inner diameter of the coil? These are factors that contribute to how many ohms it is.

Thicker wire (lower gauge number) has lower resistance per coil than thinner (higher gauge) wire.
More coils = higher resistance, fewer coils = lower ohms
thicker diameter = higher resistance

basically, the thicker or less wire used (fewer coils, smaller inner diameter) the lower the resistance, or ohms. And of course, the opposite is true. For most devices, I always shot for 1.5ohms and I got satisfactory vape from it.

It doesn't look bad at all for a first one.
I just use regular old tweezers. Put her on a deck, pulse it until it glows, release the trigger and press the coils together with the tweezers to get rid of any gaps between coils. If you fire it with tweezers touching, it'll short which is why the porcelain ones are nice.
