I wasn't sure where exactly to put this, so I'm guessing. I have a few purses and a computer bag that still smell like smoke from being around cigarettes all the time. The cloth bags I'm sure I can toss in the wash, but it's my laptop bag I'm wondering about. It's a Dickies bag, that stiff nylon/polyester type stuff (I have no idea what it actually is) that I don't think I can throw in the washing machine. I've tried Febreeze, but it doesn't really last - Within a few days it stinks again. I think that may have to do with the fact that the material is weatherproof, so things like Febreeze can't get into the fabric.

Does anyone have a method for doing this?

You need to try Zero Odor. I heard about zero odor when I was a smoker and wanted to get the smoke stink off of my clothes and furniture. This stuff is AMAZING it will get ANY smell out of anything. The spray it's self is scent less. I was kinda skeptical before I got it but man this stuff makes febreeze look like a joke.

Will it work on fabric that's weatherproof?

    On the FAQ page:
    3. Where can Zero Odor be sprayed? Zero Odor can be sprayed anywhere - in the air, on fabric and on just about any surface including directly on cat litter. Spray Zero Odor on your pet's bed, on pet-soiled and urine-contaminated carpet, in your car, and anywhere your pet might leave odor.

I have no doubt that it can be sprayed ON anything, it's just whether or not it'll sink in and work. Like I said, Febreeze couldn't soak in to work, it just sort of sat on top of the fabric :p

Is there a difference between Zero Odor and Febreeze?

Heck ya there's a huge difference. Febreeze covers up odor with scents. Zero odor is "odorless" and just eliminates the smell.

"When you spray Zero Odor, its anti-odor molecules seek out and bond with odor molecules of just about every kind, changing them into molecules that can never again cause odor. Since Zero Odor stops odor at its source, it needs no harsh chemicals and it needs no scent of its own"

    All up in your grill..
There is a product called dryel. It basically turns your dryer into a dry cleaner. It works really well for getting that smokey smell gone. Not sure about how your laptop bag would stand up to being in the dryer. (traditonal washing is not 100% effective for getting that smoke smell out of clothes, no matter what type of detergent you use.)

My fear is that it would melt...

I would think that smell is coming from the sticky gunk like on your windshield. You could try hand scrubbing with soap and water or windex.

Time will eventually fix it. Put in a high air flow place or in the sun and go buy that new bag in the meantime.:D:D

You are SUCH a bad influence...

I guess I do need a new bag though...
