I love this idea!

First, I have to say that I am a horrible haggler. Car shopping--new or used--ranks right up there with getting a root canal in my book. It's like the entire process is designed to be as demeaning, and kind of sleazy, as possible.

With that said, I read something recently that the sticker price of most use cars is set by dealers at roughly 20% over what they paid for it. With that in mind, 15-20% may be a good starting point.

4. I'm with everyone on the car shopping fiasco. My recommendation is to always have your own mechanic take a look at it and get the carfax! I'm lucky hubs is a retired mechanic so he always checks them out for me.

i am gonna go look on sunday.
i have narrowed it down to crossovers and light suvs, but everything is out of my pricerange.
i really like the mazda cx-5, nissan juke and even the kia soul. all are more than double my range.

its fun to look, and demoralizing to buy (i completely agree with you Doc).

happy hunting, hopefully.

LD if the car is advertised online there won't be as much wiggle room because the dealer isn't going to advertise a sky high price, they advertise to get you in the door. I sold new and used cars at a dealership for over 6yrs, it was fun playing the game. Don't be afraid to walk out, you'd be surprised how many times they'll Chase you down or call you giving in to "your" price. The end of the month is a good time to buy, just like in your job their trying to get their bonus's.

5. Good point .... Yes and no, there are private shops that report to carfax, but not all of them do. Also if the car was in an accident when the police were called, that gets reported. I wouldn't reply on it completely, but it will at least give you an idea if its got a good record.

The only problem with carfax is it only records things that go through a dealer or insurance company. Not anything that was done privately

#5 The Nissan trucks I have had over the last several years ( I have had several Titans) Have had zero problems. My daughter just got a Versa note and loves it for the gas mileage. Of course I think they only offer "chick" colors :) Hers was fairly reasonable only around 18. So not as much as some of the others out there.

I agree. Get the carfax at the very least (and if you're going to a dealer, get them to pay for it).

True. But, it's better than nothing. They're usually a pretty good indication if there were major issues.

If it makes you feel any better, do a search for used (or even new) cars in Puerto Rico. Pretty much every car costs $5-6,000 more here than on the mainland-U.S. I'm guessing that Hawaii is probably the same kind of issue. Of course, on an island that is only 35 miles north-south, and 120 miles east-west, it takes a long time to put miles on a car--so they last longer (generally).

I think one of the happiest days that I had in the last couple of years was making my final car payment!

Good luck everyone!
