Both my family doctor & the pulmonary specialist I was seeing for bronchitis had the same opinion of e-cigs:

"Whatever it takes to quit smoking."

The pulmonary specialist had a bit more general knowledge of e-cigs & although he did not come right out and recommend them like he did the patch or chantix, he did say that several of his patients had more luck with the e-cigs than anything else.

Any advice for this conversation? Are doctors typically aware of the device, difference between it and smoking, etc? I assume yes but figured I'd check in.

That's going to depend completely on your doctor. Mine not only knew about e-cigs, she'd just bought one for her husband (and decided to send it back and buy a ProVari after we talked about it a while - heh). The only thing I told her that was news to her was about avoiding diacetyl in juice flavors, everything else she'd already gotten herself.

My friend saw her doctor a couple of weeks ago for allergy problems. During the conversation, he said, "Why don't you try an electronic cigarette? They are selling them at the gas station across the street." He did not even mention CHANTIX, patches, or gum and was also non-confrontational or judgmental about her smoking. What a great doctor.

The appointment went well, but it not seem like the doc knew much about the product, if anything. This slightly surprised me. He consulted some sources (seemed like a Doctor's wiki), and the conclusion he reached was that they are definitely safer than cigarettes, but not the ideal solution of being off nicotine altogether. He told me he was going to look into it more. I showed him the PV (didn't puff) and the ingredients of the juice.

He was totally supportive and complimentary of me for getting off cigarettes, and said he would look into local pulmonologists who might have more experience with the product. I gave him some sources to check.
