Good news and bad news

Well, the bad news is that my computer keeled over today (Using the wife's for now!). I'm 90% certain that it's the PSU (Power Supply Unit). Given that it's run almost 24/7 for 4 years and that I was a smoker, two things that will kill a PSU quickly, I can't say that I'm surprised about it.

The good news is that today I finished my first working DIY mod! Nothing too fancy. It's just a 14500 3.7v with a horn switch, but I'm totally stoked about the fact that I built it and it works! However, I seem to have put the spring in upside down (Doh!). Oh well. No harm done. It isn't backwards or anything so no circuitry is affected. All it means is that the spring sits a little low in the box, so I have to pull it up when I put in a new battery so that it makes a proper connection. My next one certainly won't have that silly mistake!

Two shots. Here it is on the counter. Like I said, it's a simple easy build.

And here's the inside. The soldering isn't perfect. I need a smaller gauge needle to get up in there better.

The electrical tape on the bottom was because the battery cover secures with a screw at the bottom and I don't want to carry around a screwdriver with me for the event that I need to change out the battery. So, I threw on some electrical tape to simply peel back.

I was going to use some hot glue to secure everything in, but soon realized I didn't need to. I don't have too much extra wire floating around in there so I just secured it down with some adhesive. It seems to do the trick.

I didn't bother with an LED. I went with utilitarian here, and an LED is not necessary to the functioning of the device.

Nice work for your 1st mod. It's nice to be able to make your own 3.7 volt e-cig for $5.00 in parts and have the swappable batteries. Tips:

1) Post in the modder's section.
2) I don't even use the tape. The cover stays on without the screw or tape. Maybe yours doesn't, IDK. Not securing it is a safety feature against battery venting.
3) Make sure you secure the connector all around and seal it so that juice leaks don't get into the insides.
4) Many 2xAA boxes have a master on-off switch that will disconnect the circuit in case of a short or such.
5) LED can be added with a resistor between the atty + and some ground point. Atty+ -->LED-->resistor--> -

1) If it needs to be moved, that's fine. I wasn't certain where to post it, so I put it here.

2) The bottom doesn't secure and it will fall off without the screw. Thus, the tape. There is plenty of venting in it still, I made sure of that.

3) The connector is well secured, though I didn't think to seal it. I'll be sure to do so today.

4) This box has no such switch. I didn't notice when I bought it. The next purchase will certainly have that switch.

5) Yes, but like I said, it isn't needed to function and functioning is all I was going for. It being my first build, I thought I'd take it one small step at a time. The next one will likely have an LED.

Great job!! I bought a diy kit from madvapes last year but never put it together, I sent it to Steve (godzilla at foxy boxmods) and he assembled it for me. Even something that every ones says it this simple, stumped me LOL. I would have to be shown how to do it in person. I would love to find someone local who could show me how to assemble a vv boxmod like madvapes sells.

Well, I'm embarrassed to admit this... it took me two tries with that vv box mod! I messed up the solder connections on the little PCB the 1st time.

Anyway. I'd suggest you try the 3.7v mod like the one shown above 1st. Fewer connections and more robust (no PCB or tiny parts). I think there are youtube vids on how to do em. Get a soldering iron and some solder. I think MV sells a kit with pre-drilled holes. You learn by doing.....

Newegg has a no interest plan. As long as it's paid off by the end of the pre-determined period, no interest. I used it to buy the parts for the PC I'm using. That's about the only time I'll buy something on time, when there is no interest.
