It is a decent story, but the people commenting on the article are very reactionary.

Aside from people who have a particular interest or particular knowledge of a subject, the majority of people who comment on news articles are idiots. At least, that's my observation (not just for ecigs). I don't know that they're really a representative sample of the population.

Though there are occasional sensible comments like

As a non-smoker if this replaces the cig for those who are hook to the real thing then who cares. There appears to be no harm to others around them ,once that is proven let them be. Who cares what it looks like, part of the addiction is the holding of the nico-stick, my dad when he quit uses to fiddle with a pen. For those that say it looks too much like the real one, it will lead smoking the real thing in children etc etc etc.. Well I guess we should ban the non alcoholic drinks served to kids in restaurants that look like adult cocktails with their umbrella and fruit slices. Do we really need baby sitters for everything we do?

The lucky part is those ignorant reader comments don't appear in the actual Toronto Star Newspaper, just the online version.

Still though, I think it was in bad taste for the author to have walked into a cancer treatment center with one... I wouldn't even paint a straw to look like a cigarette in a cancer treatment facility.

He SHOULD have walked into a bar with it.

Unfortunately, some people just don't realize when they're vilifying themselves.

"I can't imagine companies want people to use them to quit. They're capitalizing on the fact that people will keep smoking."

Oh lord. This is the kind of stuff that urks me. We're not smoking! It may look and feel like smoking, but that's the freakin genius in it! Most people just don't like the act of it. It's just silly.

"Why do they need to look like and act so much like a cigarette?" asks Michael Perley, director of the Ontario Campaign for Action on tobacco. Some brands come with a variety of flavoured nicotine, such as tobacco, mint, vanilla or fruit.

"That's to appeal to children," says Roberta Ferrence, executive director of the Ontario Tobacco Research Unit. Nicotine, while not as risky as the smoke in cigarettes, is highly addictive.

Ok, the only reason they make flavors are to appeal to children? I love the way that was said so factually. Of course the majority of adult, former smokers wouldn't enjoy flavors. Who'd think such a thing?

Reading the comments seriously made my head hurt.

yeah , apparently people want the government to be their FULL TIME babysitter

i personally don't feel it's the governments job to worry about where we can and can't smoke , and i find it strangely ironic that the very taxes that the government takes from me at gunpoint are being used against me and my freedoms.... whoa... didn't mean to get all political there on you

I think that smoking is very much the government's problem. It started to become the government's problem when healthcare costs started skyrocketing while big tobacco continues to purvey an incredibly addictive and deadly product. The problem is that the government doesn't know what the heck it wants to do WRT tobacco.

As for e-cigs, they should totally follow FDA guidelines, but the FDA has a responsibility to not overreact and kill a potential boon to non-smokers. I think tobacco companies are scared sh*tless of the potential of e-cigs.

Not trying to pick a fight or be controversial, but your post seemed to imply that health care costs would lower if everyone quit smoking. Actually that's not true. Smokers cost less in the long term because they die earlier. Therefore they don't collect pensions as long as those who do smoke (on the average). They don't collect Medicare or social services for as long as non-smokers either.

An interesting page to look at is the following:
(Oh, well, I'm too new and not allowed to post links, but the page I wanted to post has links to papers written by statisticians and others proving that in the long term it costs the government less overall because smokers die earlier).

I'm certainly not arguing that smoking isn't bad for you. As I just said, smokers live shorter lives than non-smokers on average.

You are correct. I don't have paper links but here's an article:
Actually, a long, healthy life costs more

I think it's "funny" that anyone could consider these a gateway device to smoking real cigarettes. Even with the new prices on a pack of smokes, I think kids would get them a whole lot easier than the initial outlay for an e-cig device. And I'm up to around $700 in less than two weeks. Let's see... $5 for a pack of Marlboro Lights or $150 for a starter kit, spare parts, and some e-juice.

Stupid argument.

Johnsky, you're right. That guy who walked into a cancer ward puffing his e-cigarette is lower pond scum than the SafeCig jerk with his Obama challenge billboard. With friends like these, we surely don't need enemies.

The unfortunate part is the person that did this was the president of SmokeStik, as much as i like the e cig i will be switching fully over to the Evo when it comes in and place no more orders with SmokeStik.
Having 3 close family members die from cancer has left me sensitive on the subject, my wife and i have been recommending the e-cig to others in our community and if i had of had some could have sold them no problem.
