Hey y'all, Im very new to both ECF and rda's, but I want to take a step up.
I have an Octopus rda by smoktech right now. After some new air holes and a few toothpicks it works really well. I am kind of wanting to get a dual coil rebuildable and have seen some for 20 and some for closer to 100. Any ideas on what to look at?

If you're looking for the lower end in pricing, the Igo-W can be had for $10 - $15 depending on where you purchase.

Higher end, I'd recommend either a Patriot or (my personal favorite right now) an Omega. Patriots can be found around $60 - $70, the Omega is usually in the $80 - $90 range.

What do you guys find is the main difference between clones and the originals?

Here's a personal anecdote to answer your question.

Two people above recommended Trident clones, but did not cite which vendor they've gotten them from, so I'm not sure which particular clone they've had success with. I've owned 3 Trident clones. Two that came from vaperoyalty.com, and one from kidneypuncher.com. The one that came from kidneypuncher.com had different sized holes drilled for adjustable air, but the delrin insulator in the center post cracked in half during the 3rd rebuild. Since it was only $14 I threw it away. The two from vaperoyalty.com came without different sized airholes. Just 3 holes, all drilled the same size. One of them works great and is a hell of a value for the $12 I paid, but the other was broken out of the box. The center post spins freely when trying to tighten or loosen the set screw. I emailed vaperoyalty and got no response. Threw the darn thing away.

I bought a Steamboy Storm Rider 2.1 2 months ago from my local B&M. $125. It's a gorgeous genesis-style atomizer. I learned very quickly that I suck at building gennies, so I set it aside. Since then, my wife has gotten into rebuilding. She's GREAT with gennies. So last week I asked her to build my Storm Rider for me. Vapes great, looks spectacular! But I noticed that it leaks slightly around the top of the PET tank section. I tried cleaning the threading, replacing the o-rings, lubricating the rings, everything I could think of. I still get a very small leak. Just enough to be annoying when I pick up the device.

I emailed SteamBoy about this problem less than 1 hour ago. I received a response inside of 30 minutes with an apology and a request for my home address so they can send me a replacement tank at no charge.

The difference between clones and originals? Support and service, for starters.

Depends what kind of price range you're looking at. I have both the IGO-W and Atomic RDA. The IGO-W is easy to build on and a great low cost RDA. With that being said, the Atomic blows it out of the water as far as performance. Yeah they both can spit out a bunch of vapor if built right. But if I put the same coil set up in them both the Atomic would be a denser, warmer, and more flavorable vape.

I agree that it does depend on what clone you get, not all are created equal.
This is where I got my trident from and I havent had any problems with mine.

I have seen where people have gotten the same device and one has had problems where the other hasnt. I got lucky I guess.

Ive heard good things about the IGO-W all over the place. Also great things about the patriot…I think the most important thing for me is the air flow systems. My octopus had a janky airflow system that always leaked. What are y'alls experiences with the airflow on the IGO, patriot, and atomic?

The Igo-W doesn't offer any air control function. The stock airholes are VERY small and you'll likely want to drill them out to your preference.

The Omega offers the ability to spin the top cap to reduce the size of the airholes by covering or exposing the amount of surface area you prefer. It has 3 holes drilled in the top cap to accommodate single coil or dual coil builds.

The Patriot, like the Igo-W, comes without an airflow control option. You've got to drill the holes to your preference. The stock holes on the Patriot are larger than the Igo-W, though.

The IGO-W stock air holes are tiny and I had to drill them out, which pretty much leaves you to run nothing but a dual coil set up unless you rig something to plug one of the holes. The Atomic has true air flow control with three different options for dual coil and three different options for single coil.
