Good wires to stock up on for a beginner?

Hey all, I've been building for a few weeks now with 26 guage kanthal(twisted builds, some parallels, stuff like that) and am looking to try some different types of builds(Clapton and the like), any input for some good guages or types like nichrome or ribbon would be greatly appreciated for my next order.

I find the most versatile kanthals to be 26 and 28 gauge...As for claptons I think 32/26 is popular...I have yet to make my own, I just order it prebuilt by UD.

I was gonna order a bunch of prebuilt shot, but I saw a few videos and it didn't seem too bad to make alot of wires diy, also, I sort of enjoy the tinkering. I heard of people using nichrome with their Claptons and was wondering exactly what the difference between that and kanthal as the outer strands is.

Don't have experience with nichrome material, I read up on DIY clapton and it seems you really need a drill to have it come out perfect but good luck with your DIY!

I got like 1250ft for 80 bucks...

I'm kinda a Die Hard NiChrome 80 user. To Me, it just Tasted Better than Kanthal(s). So I would suggest picking up a Small Spool and giving it a Try.

• Kanthal A1 28ga x 3 Twisted Wire - 15ft Spool
• Kantahl A1 26ga + 32ga Clapton Wire - 15ft Spool
• Ni200 26ga Standard Wire - 30ft Spool
• SS316L 26ga Standard Wire - 30ft Spool
• Nichrome 26ga Standard Wire - 30ft Spool

but what inner diameter and ohms/watts do you like?

I appreciate all the suggestions! I have been meaning to check out kidneypuncher actually, they get a ton publicity on some reviewers I watch regularly and that UD wire box seems pretty snazzy actually. I tend to go for 2.5 mm diameter coils when I just want something to use quickly, but really, I change builds every other day just about, so basically anything new. I don't have a particular wattage I prefer, really depends on if im using microcoils macro or nano, but do always stay above .25 ohms on my regulated device.

Yeah it seems like a great starter kit, and that's not bad at all price wise for that many different types of wire. I'm definitely going to have to look it up.

Yeah... There isn't anything Hip, Trendy or Magical about NiChrome 80. It's just a Metal Alloy that has been used in Resistance Wires for a Long Time.

In fact, NiChrome 80 was the standard Atomizer Wire for Cart/Atty's, Cartos and then Clearos back in the day. Somewhere along the way Kanthal became the Rage. Not exactly sure why? But people like New Things. And Kanthal supplanted NiChrome 80 as the Wire to use.

It has slightly different Electrical Characteristics than Kanthal(s). So you build with it Slightly differently. Here is a Good Site to do "What If" builds and compare Ohms per Wraps and things like Heat Capacity...

When asked, Most people say that they Can't tell the difference in Taste between NiChrome 80 and Kanthal(s). But there is a percentage do. And as you can Imagine, about 1/2 of them Like it Better, and about 1/2 of them say they Don't. A person kinda needs to Try it to know what camp they Fall Into.

I'm not an Exotic Coil Builder. Or much into "Wire Knitting". But I have read that people like to use NiChrome 80 as either a Core or as a Wrap/Twist because of it's Ohms per Meter value(s) versus Kanthal(s).

I use it because I like the Taste of it over Kanthal(s).

Yeah, that was what threw me off about it, it seemed like an "optional" choice whenever someone had mentioned it in a build, and while yes, coil building in general is hugely subjective, I didn't exactly know just how subjective nichrome 80 was. Very much so it seems ha-ha, but nonetheless I'll certainly have to give it a go now.
