You really may have two bad batteries and if so, I know Steve will make it right. In the interim, I will add my two cents on possible solutions. I hope one of these helps so you don't have to wait longer for new batteries.
1. Are the cartomizers lined up correctly? You should see the airflow holes through the notches to get the best drag (at least for me, doing this has made a huge difference). That part was counter-intuitive to me and I would be curious if my interpretation is correct and if others find the same to be true.
2. Have you tried charging in another outlet? I was about to throw my first real e-cig at the wall (a 510 kit) because the batteries (both of em) would not hold a charge no matter what I did. Two dead batteries in one day was really frustrating to me so I know how you must feel right now. What I finally figured out was that both the plug AND the chargers were bum. I had to do a ton of switching out with known good components (glad my hubby had a set too) until I figured this one out. Who'd a thunk it?
3. VK cartomizers do still need to warm up before getting the best vape out of them. How long are you vaping before you quit dealing with it? For a brand new cart on a battery (this takes a lot less time on a passthrough), I need to puff pretty hard for 5-6 drags to get it going and it is all smooth sailing after that. Hubby actually prefers his batteries to his passthrough (no clue why this is, for me the passthrough is my buddy). So what he does is drags hard and fast about 10 times - like stoking a cigar. He does not even try to inhale when he does this - just puff, puff, puff. He does this a few times and it seems to stoke the cart nicely.
I hope one of these tricks help so you can start your love affair with the VK. Sorry it has been such a frustrating experience already.
