I almost liked the entire article.
Only a couple of small quibbles but nothing huge.

Is this theconversation.com a respected and/or popular venue?
Yeah, not perfect, but on the whole, good and well informed.

As for the site, I'm not sure. I got there from a Godshall link in another thread and then saw this article listed as a related piece.

A fair and informative article overall, but I got stuck on one line ...

"Cigarette smoking by young people is the most powerful cause of smoking by adults."

Does the author mean to say that adults will start smoking to imitate kids who smoke ?

Probably not, but stating that young smokers become old smokers later in life is worthy of Captain Obvious ...

The rest of the paragraph made sense to me, without this one line ...

I think what he means is, the best predictor for whether or not someone will smoke as an adult, is whether or not they smoked as a minor, but yeah, it's worded funny.

When I picked my daughter up from work tonight she was telling me about a young man she works with, high schooler I believe he is, who was telling her he might take up vaping. He doesn't smoke or drink or do anything for that matter and he wants to do something. My god, if that's his only reason for taking up vaping then I hope he does take it up. With all the somethings out there he could be doing I think vaping is the best solution to his dilemma lol! Scary but I remember being that age and how wonky the reasoning faculties could be. :)

I think kids are intrigued by the visible vapor, the cloud, which they can see. I think weight conscious grownups appreciate the flavors. When a kid wants junk food he eats the real thing. When I post on news stories I say I wish ecigs had been around when I was a kid and that parents should decide if their kids can posess an ecig, off school property.

Ecigs are the most altruistic reason for wanting a time machine a selfish person could ever conceive.

May be what the kid is saying is he might try vaping, take a puff or two and see if he puffs some more and yet more. So an interesting question is, how many kids who take those first few puffs become daily vapers? We like to believe a lot of kids will satisfy their curiosity with some vaping instead of smoking and that will account for a decline in the smoking rate of kids. I know an early 20's kid who clerks in a vape shop and he indicates a noticable number of never smoking young adults are vaping.

Another thing I notice is there are quite a few tobacco stores in my region and it appears they are selling a lot of vape gear, and happy to be doing it, and giving the vape shops a run for their money. The vape shops seem to be for the scene boys and the regular people are getting their vape stuff at the Wild Bills tobacco stores.

No, The Conversation is an elitist ivory tower propaganda rag. However, that's why this article is so important. It injects some sanity directly into the academic echo chamber.

Almost all progressive or socialist writers. Some mask it better than others, but yeah..... this was good:

"No matter whether you think (a) that trying of an e-cigarette is a causal gateway to later smoking that would not have otherwise happened [me: but it is cigarettes that would have otherwise happened]... or (b) that those who are more likely to try cigarettes are more likely to try e-cigarettes, once products become available to users, how these products are marketed influence which products are preferred."

"If you show more concern about vaping than smoking or if you downplay the deadly risks of smoking, you encourage young people to switch to cigarettes." Which has been the ANTZ strategery in the last year.

I've had some good goes at Simone Chipmunk through the conversation.com.au.............it is elitist, although the likes of the good Prof Kozlowski and others like Prof Linda Bauld from the UK have had some good things published. The funding for this online journal comes from Universities around the globe. The article was in theconversation.com/us last year but often the articles are published internationally.

This has to be the best comment in the comments section on that article
