Dear Nicholas:

While I am adamantly against tobacco usage, I am concerned about legislation that increases taxes on Americans.

Our tax code is a mess, and tax equity is a major issue that must be addressed. Our current system is too complicated and riddled with special interests and carve outs. Simplification of our tax system would make it fairer for all.

I will continue to support pro-growth tax policies and a more certain tax environment for all taxpayers. It is my belief, and always has been, that Americans, not the federal government, know best how to spend their hard-earned money. Thanks for taking the time to contact me. I appreciate and value your input on simplifying the tax code.

The IDEA Full Funding Act is currently pending in the Senate Finance Committee, of which I am a member. As we continue to consider this legislation, I will remember your concerns.

Sounds pretty good except I would have preferred him saying, "While I am adamantly against smoking," rather than tobacco usage. That would show a bit more understanding of the relevant arguments.

I may be jaded but it sounds suspiciously like a category driven form letter to me. I'm not trying to stir anything up but if he had quoted something that showed he actually read your letter it would have been a nice personal touch.

I sincerely hope I'm just being cynical.
