Has anyone tried to build their own atomizers?
I did just a basic experiment for a very, very crude, one time experimental makeshift atomizer that worked, leaked and soon failed. (But what a kick !! And not just a throat kick.) Started with a small metal tube (approx 1/3 inch diameter) from electric train section of a hobby store for the atomizer body. Formed a very crude end cap out of some thin metal from a craft store. (Sure it later leaked like a sieve, but we weren't going for cosmetics here.) Drilled one small hole in it to run a loop of metal guitar string wire about six inches long to begin with (so I had plenty to work with).
I used a narrow punch to get the insulator and tube out of the end of a an old Nebula/VaporKing cart and ran the long end of the wire through the insulator and out the end of the tube. I then snugged the isulator and tube through the pre-measured hole I cut in the cap I formed leaving about a half inch of wire extending from the insulator. Then batting is formed and loosely stuffed around the wire on the inside of the main tube to about half an inch from the top. Cut off enough of the wire to loop it back down inside the the tube so it's about a 1/4 inch from the top and soldered it to the outside wall of the tube using electronic solder. (It's a real trick to clamp it in place enough to solder on the inside ... but if you're determined ......)
For the wiring from an 801 penstyle battery to the crude atomizer, you attach alligator clips to two ends of one heavily insulated electric wire to go from the threaded part of a pen style battery to another very large alligator clip that you clamp to the body of the atomizer. Rig another wire with a small probe that you'll later put in the battery hole on one end of the wire and leading to a radio shack momentary on switch and the rest of the wire with an alligator clip on it that you connect to the wire that was left coming out of the insulated center part of the end cap.
I held it all in place with two "helping hands" soldering stands, then filled the batting with smoke juice (a nice V4L menthol), put the probe end into the center of the battery and on the smoking end I used a hollowed out peice of cork and a straw to keep from burning my mouth. Used the momentary switch and after a few tries vaped a nice cloud of menthol a few times as the juice leaked out of the end cap and before the atomizer got too hot from experimenting and my inside solder joint came loose from overheating. What a freakin mess and burned fingers.
Great fun for one evening though.
I'd positioned the battery so none of the juice leaked back down my makeshift wiring job and the battery was spared. The wiring from the battery to my crude atomizer also got equally hot (as I'd expected and made preparations for) so if I was serious about doing it again I'd order a tap and die and make my own direct connectors. But hey, this was just an experiment and I'd much rather find out if someone else has come up with a better system. Mine of course is no where near practical, but I got a real thrill out of knowing that I could build my own if they ever succeed in outlawing these devices. (shudder) Just my way of "stickin' it to the man" in a geeky sort of way.
Disclaimer: Do Not Attempt This at Home !!! (Ignore any illustrations where I said "you" do this or that.) I don't recommend that anyone try this because you could easily burn or injur yourself, start a fire etc. I have no idea what kind of metal I was using and if it's safe to heat and vape from for any period of time.
I'm mainly just curious if there are others like myself who may have been mild Aspergers Autism kids who got some solid and safe electronics training and can't help being obsessive/compulsive about fascinating devices like personal vaporizers and won't be completely satisfied till they completely build their own.
I'm just dying to find out what's being done out there as far as building your own atomizers or batteries beyond just the basic mods.
