After almost eight months of vaping I am still getting a little confused about batteries and need a question answered about them. What exactly is a high drain battery? Is this what is considered a protected battery? What is the difference between a protected and unprotected battery? Which is the best to use in a mod? Which is less likely to cause an explosion? What is the best brand to use in your opinion? Now I don't need a lot of technical answers because I am a complete idiot when it comes to technical stuff. If someone could please explain all this to me as simply as possible I would appreciate it. I need to buy some batteries but i need to make sure I get what is best Any inout and answers to this would be greatly appreciated.

High drain batteries can generally produce more voltage under load because they have the ability to drain faster. They are a safe chemistry battery that should require no protection circuit. (that doesn't mean 100% safe and occasionally one will vent - catastrophic failures do occur)

Protected batteries are usually lithium ion batteries and have a circuit attached to them that is designed to keep them from catastrophic failures when in an overcharge or overdischarge state or even when shorted. This also does not mean 100% safe and occasionally one will have a catastrophic failure.

I own many of both - and a couple of other types as well. I have been replacing my lithium ion protected batteries with high drain IMR batteries. It's a personal preference sort of thing, but some devices need high drain batteries to perform properly. Most of the variable voltage mods and many regulated and non-regulated mods have recommendations from their manufacturers to use high drains.

AW is top of the line for both li-on and IMR bateries. MNKE is another high end battery. BDL... well, it depends on the battery. BDLs require a little reseaarch before you buy (my opinion, but I've had great luck with smaller BDLs and the bigger ones I have really don't perform in the same ballpark as my MNKEs or Aws).
