I was wondering if it's possible to put a dual coil helios build on my sigelei zmax v3? My local B&M will be getting helios clones in soon and I really want to get into dripping. But since I'm not ready for sub-ohming and mech mods, can I do it on a regulated mod. Not sure how dual coils work, but can I do a single micro-coil and cotton build on the helios? What are some RDAs for beginners that you guys would suggest?

While it might not be ideal, you CAN run a single coil on a helios, so yes you could easily run it on a regulated mod. And if you ever wanted to try dual coils you would already have an atty do do so. It might not be a bad idea at all to just pick up a helios.

If you haven't seen it yet, kidneypuncher also has a helios clone to which you can add an additional ring with only one slot so that it's optimized for single coils.. just a thought

The "style" of coil or coils isn't relevant - what is relevant is the net resistance. I don't own a Zmax, so... reading the specs, a Zmax has a microprocessor limited 4 amp, 15 watt, 6 volt limit. It also has a resistance lower limit... although I can't tell you exactly what that is, I'd guess around 1.2Ω~1.3Ω.

So... do the math. Juggling the numbers from a amps/volts direction, 4 amps/6volts permits a 1.5Ω resistance. Juggle it from the watts/amps direction and you get just shy of 1.0Ω. A pair of 3.0Ω (probably 30ga) coils will get you to 1.5Ω - a pair of 28 ga. 2.0Ω coils will get you to 1.0Ω... but it may not fire depending on the lower resistance limit.

Here are some more links that will help you on you journey.

Not at all! I have a zmax v3 as well, and it won't fire anything under 1.3 ohms. However, if you get something like a 32 gauge kanthal you could pretty easily build two 3 ohm coils and run them in parallel to end up at 1.5 ohms, which is well within the zmax's limit.

I recently built a dual coil setup in my fatty v2, which has a much smaller deck than the helios, and you have to trap wire under the screw heads. It metered out to 1 ohm and was actually fairly easy to build (ran it on a mech). I can imagine it would be easier to build it on a helios at a higher resistance. I actually have one of the kidneypuncher clones in the mail, I should have it tomorrow. If you would like I can post back after I get a build on it

I would very much like to see what kind of build you have in it, and if you are going to run it on a vv/vw setup how you did it. I have some 32g kanthal here and that's what I'll be using to build my coils with... local store says they'll have the helios clones somewhere between 1day and 1 week from now... doing as much learning as I can before then (and more probably after I try a setup).

The plan was actually to build around a 1 ohm coil and run it on a mech, I'm a bit more comfortable and experienced building in that range, but in the interest of helping you out, and because I'm curious, I'll throw a dual coild build in it for the zmax, see where I get. I should have some 30 gauge kanthal tomorrow with the helios so it'll be similar to what you would build, just a bit larger. I'll shoot for 1.5 ohms, take a few pictures and let you know how it vapes

I just built this tonight for a thread that had a similar question. It's 32 gauge kanthal wrapped around a 5/64 drill bit for 12 wraps. Each coil is 3.8 ohms so the combined resistance is 1.9 ohms. I run it at 15 watts on a Chinese made vv/vw device and it turns out some pretty solid clouds and the flavor isn't too shabby. IMG_2630.jpg

I just tossed some cotton on real quick for test performance, that's why the wicks aren't so pretty.

i built a 1.5 ohm coils with twisted 28g kanthal and it took forever to heat up. so i ditched it and used a .9ohm and although it still takes a little bit to get going, it's working well. I also drilled out the air hole to just over 2mm and drilled the air controller to the same diameter. I just did it this morning so we'll see how it goes through the day.
