I think my profile says I joined in 2010 and I have no posts. I suppose the board was archived at one point or another. Anyways, I am here to say hello again as I left the board long ago because I went back to smoking. So Hello!

Now I am back and doing pretty good with just an e-cig. I am back to vaping with the intention of one day getting to the point where I am dependent on nothing! With that in mind, can anyone suggest a time oriented approach to try to reach my goal?

Here are the particulars;

Smoker for 30 years.

3 Weeks ago I bought an Aspire Sub Ohm Battery and Atlantis tank. Other than Nicotine, I know much of my dependency comes from the deep lung hit a cigarette gives me. The Aspire however satisfies that for me quite nicely.

I quit smoking the morning of the day I bought the Aspire and have not had a single puff of a cigarette since.

I vape on the same schedule as I smoked.

I am using 6mg of nicotine. I tried going to 4mg the last 2 days and that did not go well, I was moody, ate everything in sight and had that feeling that I "need" something so I am back to 6mg and feeling good.

I proved to myself that just 3 weeks to start messing with levels is not advisable so I was hoping you guys could suggest a plan. If it is 3 months, a year or even 3 years I am reserved to the fact that this is what it will take but your experience could help me with a plan.

Glad to be back! Without getting mushy, I am quite proud of my achievement so far. It helps that I do enjoy vaping. ;) My wife smokes and I have yet to be tempted and doubt I ever will but I would also like to enjoy nothing one day.......other than being forced by being in a casket. ;(

I smoked for 30 years too, then switched to vape in 2013.
I wouldn't be too worried about dropping nicotine strength so much; on higher powered hardware you tend to drop nicotine strength and on lower powered hardware you end up needing higher strength. Better to just have high strength available but try to vape lower strength.

hello trout and welcome back.. One piece of advice I use from a forum recommendation, is to keep a tank of stronger e liquid around in case the normal all day vapes aren't cutting it. It's rare, but every once in a while I hit it. Good luck to ya!

Ditto...I started with 24mg......now I'm down to 6mg in two months....but every once in a while I need a couple hits off the 24.

Congratulations on quitting the smokes....!

Good gear helps tremendously.

I think it's going to depend on each individual person. Some can reduce nic quickly, others it will take longer.

I smoked a pack cloves (Djarum Specials) a day for 20+ years. When I started vaping I was able to drop my nic level every 2-4 weeks. I went from 18-12-6-3-0 in a very short amount of time compared to most I hear from. I still use 1-3mg of nic once in a while when I'm stressed out on life. It always took me 2-3 days to adjust to the new nic level. I would vape much more and eat everything in sight. But after the 2-3 days my body seemed to adjust and I could cut back on the vaping and eat normally again. There was an occasion where I tried dropping nic level too soon and I had to go back up, but I didn't let that bother me. I just tried again in a couple weeks.

It's been nearly 6 months since I started vaping now. My friend that bought me my first device was vaping at 18mg also. He's still at 12mg. So it really is dependent upon each person.

Best of luck to you and I'm glad you are back to vaping over smoking!

As far as a plan goes... Welp, you tried this four years ago - with pretty much the same "how fast can I quit vaping?" thinking - and that didn't work. As a former 30 year 2 PAD smoker the best advice I can give you is to not over-think quitting vaping while you are still in the infancy of quitting smoking. At the three year mark I went through a cigarette craving fit for a couple of weeks. I didn't cave in to it - but I didn't have to because I was still vaping.

All I'm saying is don't expect to lose a three decade relationship with smoking in a matter of weeks or months. If it was that easy all we would need to do was vape for a couple of weeks and be over it. Unfortunately smoking is a lot more insidious than that and your desire/addiction/craving to smoke may not disappear with a short term goal in sight. Hell, I had quit smoking related insomnia for the first two months after I quit - even with vaping support - so I can't advice you on how to quit vaping only 3 weeks after you started again.

I say "Ditto Rickajho," as a 40 year, 2 PAD smoker who quit and started vaping just 9 weeks ago. So far,.I don't miss the cigs at all, in fact, I'm thrilled to be rid of them. I am enjoying vaping beyond my wildest dreams. During these 9 weeks, I have cut back from 24's to 8-12's primarily because as my throat began to heal, the higher nic levels just felt harsh, so it was just a natural progression, not a planned transition. For now, this achievement is more than enough. I don't even think about becoming nic-free, it's just not on my radar, but to each their own and I wish you luck.

This x1000! I started vaping back in Sept. '13 with 18mg. I just recently went down to 12, like the last month or so. Ive had no problem with it at all. So I started buying my future stock in 6mg. I tried some 6mg in my Reo a couple of weeks ago and I found out I'm so not ready for that yet!

Just take your time, you're not in a race. Youre body will tell you when you're ready.

back to ecf troutspinner. Nice to meet you and I'm glad you're back. I don't care if you have tried to vape and gone back to smoking. I don't imagine there are a huge percentage of people who quit smoking the very first time they tried. I think of all the times I tried. I smoked and vaped and just started cutting down on cigarettes to save money. I just kept on and the more I cut down, the more I actually preferred vaping. My cigarettes that I had smoked for so many years, started tasting terrible. I just enjoyed vaping more. The point that you are back, says that you want to stop smoking. Who know, this may just be the time that you can do this. You have better equipment and you know you have a huge support group here. I wish you all the luck in the world. And I hope one day I read about your successful vaping. Have fun.

Thanks to all who responded and thanks Rick for the info. You are all right, I tried to rush it a few years ago and that got me nothing. I WAS of the mind of rushing it this time but with taking a step back and clearly thinking about it, I am happy where I am. If I want to take another step when I feel ready, be it a month, week or decade, I'll take that step then. Most importantly, I like where I am and I do not miss analogs, they are inferior to the results I get with vaping on the equipment I am using and I get MANY benefits.

My big thing was two things: ....... :D

1. Habits. Smoking is more than a physical addiction, it is also mental. That's why I keep my device in my left hand and never put it down when I am vaping. If I put it down before I'm satisfied, I'll want a cig. Works for me.

2. WTA - Whole Tobacco Alkaloid. It made all the difference for me. Here's a post I did about it:

Hope this helps!
