Hello!/Burnt coil taste

Hi, Im new to the forums so first off Hello! My name is Worldofpain. You can call me pain. I started vaping about 2 months ago and I am addicted to everything about it. I started with just a basic pen setup I bought from a gas station. Then i bought a ECTO 1300 which is actually pretty nice for people who are just vaping for the nicotine (which i was at the time). A few weeks ago I went out a purchased a Kanger Tech SUBOX Mini. I love it. At first I couldn't really hit it well but after a few days I was blowing giant clouds like a pro (noob). Anyways.. I am happy to be here and hope to learn some stuff.

Now for my problem. I have been using the hell out of my SUBOX mini with the .5 coil. Well yesterday it started to taste a bit burnt. Well im waiting for the vertical coils to come in to my local vape shop next week so I decided to use the 1.5 coil that came in the starter kit for now. I pre wet the wicks. Then I primed it by taking a few dry hits. After that took 5 quick hits at low wattage. Well the first few hits were great.. smooth and decent cloud. I set it down for a few mins and then I went to hit it again and I thought everything was good so I took a huge lung hit.. Well it was really burnt.. Like so bad it tasted like burnt plastic. I almost vomited. What did I do wrong? For now I put the .5 back in. At least it only tastes slightly burnt. Thanks in advance.

First off, welcome to the forum! Glad to have you here. Now, to me, it sounds like you're not getting sufficient wicking action and it's running dry to get a burnt hit. If you are running a high vg liquid, it could take some time between hits for the liquid to wick up to the coil again. I just got a Kanger subtank mini and that's the first tank I've used almost since I started vaping. I've been a mech person almost from the start, but I got a temperature controlled box and didn't want to use a dripper, so I got this tank. I can get some beautiful hits off of it, but find if I don't let it sit for a minute, it'll run dry.

Hi and welcome to the board. You don't mention any wattage numbers, but you say you started with 5 low watt hits on the 1.5 coil. Did you turn it up after? A .5 coil will withstand more watts than a 1.5 will. It won't help you with this one, most likely; once they taste burnt, they are and beyond fixing. But in the future, remember to keep the power lower with the 1.5s than the .5s and you should do ok.

Look at the volt reading for that 1.5 coil at that power, around 6 volts. On a homemade coil that could be alright but this is a mass market device and they aren't going to sell something that doesn't at least "work" on a standard battery voltage (3.7-4.2V, which would result in closer to 12 watts). Just another "sanity check" to consider.

Heya pain and I also have the subox, as for the vertical coils don't be a (MODERATED ) like I was a few weeks ago and waste the cash on replacement coils, get using that RBA that came with your kit , if you have been using the 0.5 coil and you are a direct lung vaper the RBA is already setup with a 0.5 coil , as for vertical vs horizontal I really don't see any difference apart from the amount of watts the verts can handle. Some say you get better taste, I didn't see any at all

A few notes I will add when starting with the RBA wick it "fail" try again, and eventually when you get to build your own coils I went for 26gauge kanthal with always gives me 0.5 - 0.6 ohms on the RBA, I usually run my subox on the RBA at 24w which is roughly 3.5v and every juice I have tried with it so far has been really good, and on the plus side if you change flavours you just rip out the old cotton, dry burn your coil, rewick and you are off again with no after effect from your last liquid

I ordered some 1.2 OCC coils by mistake. I did like the 1.2 coil that came with the subtank and it worked flawlessly. I love the .5 ohm coils but was trying to use up the 1.2 that I ordered and have burnt up 2 of them. My wattage is down between 10 and 12 so it must be that I made my new batch of juice at 60/40 vg/pg instead of 50/50. I'm going to try the pin stick on the OCC wicking on the next coil and see if that will help it wick better. At least until my .5 ohm coils arrive.
Update: I did the pinprick into the OCC on my 1.2 ohm coil and now the coil is reading .27 and my Invader Mini is in TC mode reading my coil as a nickel coil. I'm going to trash this coil and put my subtank back on my Sigelei 75 as I had no issues with the Subtank on it.
