Hello, just wanted to introduce myself. Been vaping for about 3 years now off and on, I have been off Analogs since mid October 2013! Originally started with a Joytec 510 then to a 510 box mod with 14500 batteries, currently using Kanger EVOD system. Recently started building my own coils for my EVOD head but it's just too small for my fat fingers hah!

Here is my question, Purchased a Helios RDA for my EVOD VV 1000mah, made a coil for ~1.5Ohms and I get a VERY harsh Throat Hit. I have lined up the air holes with the coil/wicking. Tried different ohms up to 2.5, messed with the voltage, nothing seems to tame it down. I am just looking for that lung satisfaction as I am currently not getting it with my current setup. Also using 6mg juice I would assume 50/50 mix (purchased from online store and they don't list the mix). Any help would be appreciated.

Welcome to the forum, im pretty new myself. I think your problem may be linked a little bit to the sizing of the air holes. If it is too small it will not cool off the coils enough causing a burnt wick which sometimes tastes bad but others it does not. That would be my opinion if I had to guess.


edit: forgot that particular rda has adjustable airflow. Have you tried opening the airflow all the way up?

The only thing I can think of in regards to Helios is maybe open (drill a larger hole) the air hole a little.

Here are some pictures. I've tried the stock airflow holes completely open. The holes are quite large. Sorry this is a Helios CLONE not authentic.







It is a Single Micro coil setup currently. 28ga kanthal 10/11 wraps ~2.5Ohms. I get this same result as far as harshness goes for 7/8 wrap 1.5Ohms as well.

I have it wicked through the coil and laying down on the cup portion and then I have another strand of cotton sitting under the coil. I have tried fluffing on top since the airholes are a bit higher on the top cap.

Do you have anyone around you that has a mechanical mod? If so could you try it on that and tell us how that is? im wondering if its not getting enough amperage/power.

See that was my thoughts as well but haven't had much luck with answers. I don't know anyone around here that has a mech mod unfortunately. I was told as long as I didn't go sub ohms with my coil build I would be fine.

with the cotton/wick taken out of it does it heatup fast/slow? does it glow? maybe the wicking is too tight? Im still thinking air is the issue.

It was so so honestly. About the rate at which the first EVOD head I rebuilt and am using currently. I would say maybe 3 seconds or so to glow. It glew from the inside out like it is supposed to. Had good vapor production but it's like a punch in the back of the throat. I will try wicking it more loosely and check back in.

what kind of cotton are you using? the only time ive had a problem with big throat hit is really high nicotine and too much wick in the coil

Here is a short video after rewicking it more loose inside the coil. It seems like it has enough power to produce the vapor, but again this is more first RDA so I could be wrong. You can see in the video is seems to heat up pretty quickly.

The TH is a little more tolerable but still pretty harsh. I feel like I am back on 24mg nic again lol.

i would tuck some of the cotton on the side without the coil under the coil if you can. That looks like it should hit fine. What Mg nicotine do you smoke in a tank? because in a rda you would want to use half as much because it acts as if it is double

I use 6mg nic (same as my tank) not sure of the ratio. I've thought about grabbing some VG from the store and mixing it to cut down on the nic to see if that will help as well.

you could also try mixing some distilled water. But also if you use 6mg in a tank i would use 3mg or less in a RDA because in a rda it 6mg is like vaping 12mg in a tank.

Welcome in....I would say your new RDA is doing a much better job of vaporizing the juice thus needing to reduce the nic in the juice.
