Hello folks!

Long time stalker, first time poster. I've been rolling my own cigarettes for years now ($1.05 a pack, so not very expensive), and I've been considering the switch to ecigs for a while, but the economy has had me unwilling to drop the cash on any gear. I did recently pick up a Red Dragon Medium tobacco flavored disposable (way overpriced at $12) and gave it a shot. I did enjoy the experience for the most part, and I think I'll be pulling the trigger fairly soon.

The problem I ran into was a bad reaction to the PG. It was a mild allergic asthma attack that crept up on me. I've had those before, but never this time of year. The symptoms increased with PV use and went away after I stopped vaping. I continued analog use, just vaped a little between fewer analogs. I did some research (I got straight A's in my pharmacology and anesthesiology classes in my veterinary technology studies) and I found that more concentrated forms of PG (such as the liquids used for vaping) are known to cause allergic reactions in folks with eczema (which I have) or other skin allergies. So I came back to this site and found that most folks with PG troubles seem to have a better time with VG.

That brings me to my questions (as a noob, I'd be delinquent if I didn't bring any):

-Are there any disposables I could try that contain only VG?
-If I'm planning on getting an m401/403, do they tend to work alright with VG?
(Keep in mind, I'm not asking for opinions on which model to buy, just the suitability of the 401 or 403 for use with VG.)

I know this is a wordy post, but I wanted to avoid the standard questions that noobs seem to be asked by veterans when they first seek advice on a forum. Thank you in advance to all who take the time to respond :2cool:

LiteCigUSA has a disposable kit for $9.99 that comes with carts and a little charger. I am sure the carts contain PG, but you you wanted to fill them yourself with a VG based juice, you could do that. According to someone in the comments a 510 cartomizer fits on it so you could fill it yourself.

Disposable E Cigarette – 510 E Cigarette | Disposable 510 B Ecig | Disposable 510 B Vaporizer

For just $20 more you can get an ego at Liberty Flights with a long lasting battery (8+ hours). I've been using mine since I started vaping. Get some boge cartomizers and some good quality juice and you'll be good to go.

Electronic Cigarette - Starter Kits - Riva 510

For $20 you can get a 510 (I'll be back with the link). It's small and batteries don't last long but you get a good vape.

Welcome to the ECF! Unfortunately, I haven't seen a disposable described as having 100% VG cartridges. You should be able to get decent results with the 401 and VG, although the atomizer might tend to clog with the thicker juice. Some VG juices are fairly thin and hopefully others will chime in with some recommendations with respect to that. I know some juices I've been using from Madvapes are 80% VG and are quite thin. Others that I've used in 50/50 mixes are pretty think and clogged a little on the 401.

Thank you all very much for the warm welcome

I didn't expect so many responses in such a short time, and this is coming from a guy who moderates another forum. I've got some good leads to run down here; so I definitely don't feel ignored, classwife.

I was a bit afraid of the thicker VG giving trouble wicking to the atty. Thanks, cyberwolf, for the first hand account of trying high VG blends with the 401. I assume you would recommend trying the 80% VG from Madvapes if I get a 401? I ask because it's counterintuitive that it would be thinner than the 50/50. 80% would be unlikely to cause a reaction so it would be convenient for me to not have to mix.

I'm hoping to hear from someone who uses straight VG with the 401/403. I understand the liquid can be thinned with pure water.

@ swedishfish: My fault for being so wordy, still good links! http://www.mypvshop.com/ has 401,2,3 custom starter kits.

(I use PGA to thin VG)

I'm a cheap date, so maybe I should avoid PGA for the moment

Sweet! One thread and I'm almost ready to pull the trigger. Sadly, I must now pull out the Supermatic and continue what big tobacco started. At least I'm using additive free baccy and high density filters, but man, do my lungs hate me. Sixteen years of pack-a-day are catching up to me, I'd rather be :vapor:

Critter Man, welcome aboard!

I had the same reaction to PG, and go figure, I have eczema. Didn't know there was a correlation, but doesn't it just figure! LOL
Since I've been reading the forum, I've decided to start looking into the shampoo and stuff I use as well. I only vape VG. If they're using PG in the flavorings, it's not enough to bother me. Except vanilla, vanilla anything hates me, LOL

The first disposable I tried was a Krave menthol that I bought at the discount tobacco store. I'm not 100% sure, but I think that was a straight VG liquid they used. It's an awful lot like JC's VG Wisconsin Frost. I had no problem with that one, or the two I bought after it.

I'm not familiar with 401. I have a 510 and a 510T. the regular 510 is good with VG. The Tank is not so good, it has a very small inlet for the fluid and it seems to get blocked up fast. A week ago I bought an eGo battery, charger and some 510D cartomizers. I'm VERY happy with how those are performing!

I've found that success MOSTLY depends on the atomizer or cartomizer that you're using. Clearomizers need thinner juice, but they had a habit of coming apart and getting juice all over the inside of my purse, so I scrapped them pretty quickly.

It's not so much the VG that clogs things- certain flavors seem to do it more than others in my (somewhat limited) experience. With the fruity juices that I like- the Boge 2.0 ohm cartomizers work well on my 3.7v mods (eGo's are a bit weaker at 3.2 volts- I happily used 1.8 ohm atomizers with my eGo clone system) but do clog after a couple of days. At $1.50 each it's not that big of a deal- you can wash them, but I haven't bothered.

The juice/atomizer pairing is the part that will make you crazy or broke. There's such a variation with the way things taste, and behave on different equipment.

The different numbers refer to the screw fitting between the atomizer, and the battery. What really varies your vaping experience is the voltage of the battery, and the ohm rating on your atomizer. You seemed pretty sold on the 401 connection, but there are a lot more cartomizer/atomizer options available for a 510 fitting, and there's a better chance you'll find your sweet spot easier. You can probably get adapters if the 401 system is a good deal.

The tank system I tried didn't really work for me either.

I'm vaping Rockstar Vapor Cranberry/Strawberry- it's my favorite. I don't tend to thin it-they will if you ask them to I don't know what they use...I don't think it's PGA because I can feel it when I vape it too (foggy, but not "drunk"). I haven't bothered lately.

Clouds of Vapor and Bluemist also have some yummy VG juices. The juice from Gourmet Vapor is THICK- almost like a gel, and it's just not my favorite. A lot of people like them, but they clog something fierce in my gear. It's really not that big of a deal to soak an atty, but cleaning a clogged cartomizer doesn't work all that well, at least for me. I also DIY but mainly because I enjoy it.

A 510 unit will give you a lot of options for atomizers, and cartomizers so you can really customize the experience to your taste. A lot of people like the eGo's and their clone the Riva 510's and you can usually find a deal on a starter kit. I have a REO, and a Roughstack from Madvapes because I really didn't feel comfortable leaving my analogs at home until I had a giant 18650 battery with me. I can't kill a 2400 mah battery in a day- try as I might. At 650 mah, the Riva had a habit of dying at inconvenient times, and I'd light up an analog immediately.

Good luck!!!! Sorry for the novel.

Thank you very much for your detailed input, SuziesMom!

I don't mind reading long posts as long as they are well written, and yours was. I tend to use very long, complicated sentences and I know that's hard to read. I figured the type of PV to get would come into the conversation eventually, so I was not offended. There are several reasons why the 401 platform is appealing to me.

First, there is the similarity to analogs. I know that's more important to noobs like me, but I don't see anyone in my area vaping in public and I'd rather not be questioned by local law enforcement on a daily basis about my "drug paraphernalia" as a lot of units look like something to use with ......... Add my long hair and boyish good looks and I'd have a lotta 'splainin' to do.

Second, there is the flexibility of the system. An exposed bridge, manual and auto batteries of varying size, and ready availability of PCC units, PTs, and chargers.

Third, the way most users describe the experience appeals to me. It seems to carry flavor at least better than the average bear, and has a milder throat hit for most. I was able to try out the Red Dragon long enough to know that a hard throat hit is something I don't care for. I'm trying to avoid coughing, after all.

Most of my use early on will be times when it is inconvenient to smoke analogs. I do not smoke indoors or in cars, so I often find myself sucking down half an analog between a car and a store or home. I also game and am a moderator for my gaming clan's forums as well as a website and server admin. When I'm in the middle of a two hour battle, I can't excuse myself to go outside for a smoke. The others would frown on that.

To sum up, small cartridges and short-lived batteries are not a problem for me now, so the main super mini drawbacks do not bother me. I've yet to find a more widely accepted super mini, so the 401 is the way I'm going as long as VG is doable.

All that's left for me now is to find a good deal on a starter kit with two complete PVs, refillable carts, at least one charger, and PCC or a PT. I still have to figure out which VG to go with, there were some mentioned earlier.

Does anyone else have suggestions for VG to use with the 401 specifically?

I actually found the information on a website dealing with food for folks who are all about "super foods". It doesn't mean that PG will cause a reaction in everyone with eczema, but it does help explain why a friend of mine told me that a friend of hers went to the ER after vaping for the first time. An inexperienced person sucking away on a high nicotine vapor could easily OD on nicotine and/or have a severe allergic reaction, prompting some medical intervention. My friend did say that it was because ecigs contain freon . I assumed she meant antifreeze and was confusing ethylene glycol with propylene glycol (oddly enough, also used in antifreeze). I set her straight. I never heard if it was an allergy or an OD.

The 401 has an exposed bridge so wicking shouldn't be an issue.

I myself when I was first starting out found I kept going back to (here come the sneers lol) Dekang USA mix, I mention it mainly because a lot of sites you get your starter kit from will probably have it and give you a deal on some (you can also only pay shipping once that way).

Juice is a very subjective topic but I really don't think your 401 will have an issue with any vg you choose (so long as your not hitting the straight glycerine off of a craft store shelf uncut).

I started with a m601 (m301 same diff) and it had no issues with vg juice.

I hope it works out well for ya bud, but the way your goin about it at least it won't cost you an arm and a leg if it doesn't (just realise that there's a lot of different options you can get in to from there).

Thanks, Chime!

It looks like I just have to avoid especially viscous VG. Also, I have been watching the forums long enough to know that buyer's remorse is an epidemic among vapers. I feel like pulling the trigger, so I'm gonna do some shopping around. If anyone knows of a particularly fantastic deal on 401 starter kits, I'd be glad to hear it.
