Hi! My name is Laura, and I'm new to the forums and to vaping. I've been a 1/2-3/4 pack a day smoker for about fourteen years. I bought the Blu starter kit last year and was less than impressed -- it helped me cut down a little, but after a month or so I gave up and threw it in a drawer. A few days ago I decided I'd give it another try, but when I pulled the kit back out I discovered that the batteries had completely given up the ghost. So I started searching online for a suitable replacement, and stumbled across ECF. I didn't even know that e-cigs other than cig-alikes existed, lol.

After lots of Googling, several Youtube videos, and a couple of days lurking around here, I trundled down to my local B&M and am now the proud owner of a Kanger EVOD starter kit. I smoked one more analog after I walked out of the store -- that's been nine and a half hours ago (!!!) and the only thing I'm missing it the actual tactile feel of the analog itself, which I'm sure will go away with time. I'm trying not to get ahead of myself -- my current goal is to scale back to 1-3 analogs a day, but if today is any indication, I very well may actually be able to kick this stinky habit to the curb!

Thanks for the warm welcome! I'm very excited about the possibility of actually quitting. This is the longest I've gone without an analog in about eight years, lol. (That would be the last time I tried to quit, and it was cold turkey, and not pretty at all.)

I actually do have a question, come to think of it -- the guy at the B&M was very helpful in showing me how to work my EVOD, but I didn't think to ask him about maintenance. I'm assuming that everything that isn't the battery will need to be cleaned at some point? How often/what are the signs that it needs to be cleaned? What is the best way to go about doing that?

Hi! I've been using a kanger tank for a few months now and have the following cleaning tips:

I have to clean mine every couple of days to facilitate good vaping, your usage may vary. I carry mine in my pocket and the air holes in the 510 connector, (the piece the coil screws into and and also screws into the battery) get clogged quickly.
Also clean it out and put a new coil/atomizer in if you switch juices.

To clean I remove the tank from the 510 threaded connector and the coil/atomizer from that and rinse the tank and connector thoroughly in warm water. I then use a q-tip dipped in 99% isopropyl alcohol and clean the threads. If its a heavy/thick/dark juice I will swab the entire tank and poke the isopropyl-soaked q-tip through the mouthpiece. I then poke a needle through the air holes in the 510 connector. Dry with paper towel and blow out the tank. You'll know to clean the 510 connector if it gets very difficult to draw vapor when you pull on it. The kanger I have has very small air holes and they tend to clog easily. I also Q-tip out the threads on the battery, first with a dry q-tip and then one with just a little isopropyl. It's a good idea to do this every time you screw your battery onto your charger so residual liquid doesn't get in the battery connection and lessen the charge and just general gunking-up of the battery connections.

Don't know if the B&M guy explained the coil/atomizer portion to you or not but if your vape starts to taste burnt or just different it may be time for a new coil. Different types of juices will clog up and reduce the life of the coil at different rates. That one annoyed me when I first started because I read that coils should last a couple weeks. With a thick, dark 70/30 tobacco liquid I had to change coils every 3 or 4 days.

One more thing, and one more post lol.... I smoked for 12 years since the last time I quit. It was gradual to switch over for me but once I did it was awesome. No more morning cough, my lung capacity increased dramatically, (took up mountain biking!) and my sense of smell and taste are tenfold.

The hardest was that first smoke in the morning with coffee. I just couldn't give that one up for a couple weeks. I'd have the one smoke and then vape the rest of the day. I finally gave it up and that was over 3 months ago.

So good luck, it's not hard. You learn to love the vape more than cigarettes even.

Thank you so much for the detailed cleaning instructions! That's going in a text file on my computer right now, lol. He did tell me about how to tell if the coil needed to be changed. I didn't know that they could go out so quickly, though. The kit came with five, including the ones already in the vaporizers, but that kind of makes me want to start stockpiling them, lol.

I don't know if this is even possible, so it may be in my head, but I swear that my sense of taste has gotten more sensitive just over the past almost twelve hours. And I feel you on that first smoke -- that's why my initial goal is to just get down to 1-3 analogs every day, I really am not sure that I'll be able to forego that first cigarette with my coffee. But I'm going to give it a shot in the morning (er... this afternoon... I'm in night owl mode at present, lol) and see if I'm okay with letting that one go.

The only tiny tinge of regret I have is that I have almost a full carton of Marlboros in my freezer . Ah, well, I suppose that if my last analog was my last analog, I'll have some very grateful smoker friends!

Well, before you start "stockpiling" coils, consider this. While coils are fairly inexpensive, Kanger Protank eVod atomizer heads in 1.8 2.2 and 2.5 ohm for $5.79 you could also learn to dry burn to clean them Advice: How to Clean & Dry Burn - KANGER - EVOD & PROTANK - YouTube watch the vid a couple times before trying just to make sure you understand. The guys a little spastic but does a good job.

Welcome to the forum!
I quit after smoking for well over 40 years and thought I never would quit since I had tried patches, gum, drugs, you name it and I tried it. Haven't had a cigarette since January 13th and my wife beat me by about 2 weeks to her last cigarette. I struggled with the idea of giving up that last 1-2 cigarettes a day but decided that it was just a mental thing and I was better than that so I let go and I'm not looking back! Go for it, you can do it! :vapor:

Welcome aboard!

Don't worry about the "last cig", let it run it's course. You'll probably find that after a bit, you'll light one up and go "EWWWW!"

Coil life will vary depending on the flavor. Some will gunk them faster than others. The cleaning and dry burn is a very effective way of getting them back to nearly new performance. You'll likely find the flavor wicks are not reuseable, and need to be replaced each time. (You have to take them out to see the coil to dry burn. Kangers use two 1mm strands of silica for flavor wicks and one 2 mm strand through the coil itself.) I use 100% cotton yarn to replace the flavor wick, trim even with the wick after putting the chimney back on. Cotton wicks well, but doesn't dry burn - it just burns :) Some tease out a length of cotton from cotton balls, but since cotton expands quite a bit when wet, getting just the right amount can take some trial and error. I find the yarn to be just right, and so easy...

Welcome to the forum! Congratulations on making the switch. You just told my story! I bought the Blu, then found ECF and got an ego starter kit. No cigarettes since that day. You can do it, too.:)

Thank you for the welcomes and support, guys!

Thanks for the video! I always fare better with actually being shown how to do things, lol. Also, clicking the link for the atomizer heads, I realized that I made a newbie mistake -- the kit came with a box of atomizer heads, but the guy at the store called them coils, so I thought that the whole head was called the coil and not just the actual coil, lol.

This is my plan. Anytime I fully commit to making a drastic life change I freak myself out and fail before I start. So instead of telling myself, "I'm going to quit smoking," I'm telling myself, "I'm going to start vaping, and try to use that to help me cut down." I've already gotten the, "You know you should quit completely, it leads to all these horrible things that will kill you," from one friend. I mean, she was nice about it, but I know this, that's why I want to cut down? Quit messing with my psychological manipulation of myself! Lol. Regardless, it's been almost a full day, and I even managed to work through the initial morning craving with my EVOD in lieu of an analog, which I wasn't sure I could do -- cigarettes and coffee make such a good pair, lol.

Coil life will vary depending on the flavor. ... I find the yarn to be just right, and so easy...

Having discovered that I misused the word "coil" when I meant "atomizer head," I'm not sure I want to jump in just yet in dealing with replacing all the tiny parts within the head, lol. For now I'm okay with just replacing the heads. I will definitely keep your wick replacement advice in mind if I do decide to go that route, though, thank you! :)

Hi Laura. Welcome to ECF! One thing you will find is that there is never a dumb question: if you don't know what something is, just ask. We have all been where you are.

I would suggest not beating yourself up if you smoke every now and then in the beginning. Many of us took a while to completely escape tobacco's clutches (some are still trying). It can take a while before you find the equipment, the nicotine strength, and the flavor that will work for you. Remember that it's about the cigs that you don't smoke, much more than those you do.

Best of luck and congratulations! You've taken a huge step!

Dont forget that mods arent just for vaping. When tightly clenched in your fist with the lower portion protruding, they also double as a concealed weapon. You can put quite a knot on any attackers head with a simple raised to downward rapid lowering of the mod in your tightly clenched fist. Just dont let any politicians find out this secret dual purpose.
