So I'm thinking about building a TC nickel coil on my kayfun v4.

But I thought I'd need the peek insulator upgrade kit for sub ohm on the KFv4 (is it called the 4S Kit)?

Or is this not needed due to TC?

Depends on the ohms in the tank. But that's going to be pretty low with Ni200 or Ti wire. The thing is, the stock Delrin insulators melt at about 190 degrees F; PEEK about 480. The lower resistance you go, the hotter the posts get. (The posts don't get as hot as the wire, unless you trigger it and hold it on until the battery is flat, but it could get too hot chain vaping.) You're probably not goung to set your TC down that low, so I'd probably do it. The kits are cheap and easy to install with hand tools. And it makes the tank breathe better from a bigger air channel. I wouldn't have a V4 without, no matter the resistance. YMMV, you make the call.

I guess that's a no to TC without the 4S kit then :(

Thanks for the info @suprtrkr

I can't bring myself to put the 4S kit into my only KFv4, as I'm not a big sub ohms vaper, just wanted to try it.

Gives me a reason to think about buying a second one though! :)

To hi-jack my own thread, what are people recommending as the best +Ohms single coil for the KFv4.

I'm mainly using 28g Kanthal, 1.4 to 1.8 Ohms, 3mm ID.

I've got the airflow as far open as the authentic without the 4S will allow, and it's great and never dry hits, but I'd like to fine tune the flavour (without restricting the airflow).

I have 28g Nickel, 28,30 and 32g Kanthal to hand. :)

That's on you, Catterpiller. I like dual coils and wide open air myself (read Fogger). If you have 28 and 32 awg Kanthal A1, and a variable speed drill (and patience, and a solid capacity for frustration), and flavor is where you want to be, try wrapping the 32 around the 28 to make Clapton wire, or twisting 2 or 3 strands of the 32 (*much* easier) and spooling a coil out of that. Note: the post holes have to be big enough to take the wire, but I've got a 28/32 Clapton on my V4 (clone) right now, no probs. You'll have no trouble in the 1.2ish range on your coils. You could probably go down to .8 without too much heat. The Clapton on my V4 right now ohms out at .46, and I haven't melted yet; but I put it in before the 4S kit arrived. I'm still waiting to break it down and clean it before changing the insulators. You have an ohm meter, right? Use it, please ;-) The 32 Kanthal can wlso be wrapped around the nickel wire. The current takes the path of least resistance-- the bigger and shorter wire in the middle-- so the outer coils are there just to add heated surface area, getting more hot wire in contact with the juice.

If you like the looks of the K4 but want better performance put a Silverplay deck under it.

I LOVE the look of the K4. Mine has blue glass and Matches my Channa mod perfect.

But the K4 has crap airflow, crap dryhits, crap, crap crap.

The Sliverplay deck is crazy easy to build and wick. The AFC is top of the line. Can be adjusted from the Kayfun choke to RDA at the twist of a dial. 28ga would make a very mild build.

Top fill with the SP base is stupid easy and works every time. The K4 chimney and tank screw right on, no modding at all.

So................

Easy to build from mild to wild

Easy airflow from mild to wild.

Fast easy top filling

NEVER leaks.

NEVER EVER dry hits.

What the K4 should have been honestly.

No reason it can't be nickel but I have not done it personally. Should be much better without the ......ed spring.

I'd love to. But they've been out of stock for forever (sigh). I don't really want a cheap, Slo-Tech clone. Not when you can buy a real one for 40 bucks. Or could, if they had any. Query: This means you'd also have to give up the 6mm chimney, correct? I mean, the top of a V4 won't fit on the Silverplay chimney, right?

MIne is a FT clone. Takes 2 weeks tops.

Your just swapping the build decks.

The K4 chimney is the bottom of the tank. Just screw it onto the SP beck. The whole operation takes about 15 seconds. You don't even have to drain your tank.

To fill close the airflow ring. Then top fill like a K4. Now start the screw for the cap and about half way turn it over and finish tightening. Open AFC ring and vape.

I heard that. Thanks.

Thanks again.

I'm still at the novice stage of coil building, having only done a few 28g-32g single micro coils in my KFv4, a couple of 28g dual micro coils in my Derringer, and one TC nickel coil (also in my Derringer).

So I'll consider trying a Clapton and more advanced coils a little later on. :)

Again on you, Catterpiller. FWIW, you can buy Clapton wire and/or coils online, to save yourself the PITA of twisting it. I haven't noticed anybody selling lengths of twisted wire-- it's so easy to do-- but they do sell twisted pre-made coils also.

In the end I spent the last couple of hours attempting a dual coil build on the KFv4.

IMG_20150628_015935_edit.jpg

Ended up with a 28g, 12 Wrap per coil, 3mm ID, 1.27 Ohm, Kanthal Build.

Quite pleased with the build, and the coils fire nicely in unison.

Wicked it, juiced it. Hit it at 25w - and it was AWFUL! :(

A quick re-wick and it's now - AWFUL!

I'm 90% sure this is a wicking issue. Tastes a lot like my first ever single coil builds on the KF, darn unpleasant tasting mainly of cotton.

It's 3am, so I'm going come back to this tomorrow.
